IJsselstein

IJsselstein was founded as a settlement in the area of IJsselstein Castle , which is mentioned for the first time in 1279 . The castle came into the possession of Gijsbrecht van Amstel (also called Gijsbrecht van IJsselstein ), the first lord of the IJsselstein barony .

Presumably the village received town charter between 1331 and 1360. In 1390 the city walls were built. Maybe this was the second city wall. Since 1398 a canon monastery was located at the Nikolauskirche . In 1417 IJsselstein Castle was razed. In 1418 and 1466 the city was devastated. After 1466, an area was delimited by a new city wall that was only about half the size it was before. Ijsselstein Castle was rebuilt around 1467 under the direction of Frederik van Egmond. In 1551 IJsselstein came into the possession of William of Oranien ( Willem van Oranje ). Around 1815, IJsselstein was incorporated into the province of Utrecht. From 1852 onwards, most of the city wall was demolished. The Catholic St. Nicholas Basilica is built in 1887

In 1961, the Gerbrandytoren , which was 382.5 meters high at the time, was the tallest structure in the Netherlands to date.
