occupation

Il Divo (German: "The Divine") is an award-winning Italian - French biopic about the former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti in 2008. Directed by Paolo Sorrentino played Toni Servillo the title role.

action

Giulio Andreotti has been in power in Italy for four decades . In 1991, the small and slightly hunchbacked politician was elected Italian Prime Minister for the seventh time . The Christian Democrat always leads his party and the respective governments calmly and with full calculation. If everyone around him is still asleep in Rome , he is already awake and allows his bodyguards to lead him into the church to pray. While he is careful to reveal as little as possible about himself, he collects all and especially spicy information about his rivals in order to be able to use it to his advantage at the right moment.

In private conversations and at public appearances, he justifies the secret service crimes that were deliberately attributed to the Red Brigades in order to strengthen the parties in the middle - like his Democrazia Cristiana . Power is paramount to him. He also maintains ties to the Mafia and lets his political opponents and even his own colleagues, such as Aldo Moro , get out of the way. He himself seems above reproach. In 1993, when he was tried for the first time and he was accused of doing business with the Mafia, he was ultimately unable to prove a criminal offense.

background

Director Paolo Sorrentino staged Il Divo as a political satire about Giulio Andreotti, who was first elected Prime Minister of Italy in 1972. The politician has held this post a total of seven times, and his terms of office never extended beyond two years. He was involved in 34 governments and a total of 21 ministers. From 1992 he was a senator for life . A year later he was tried for the first time in court on charges of favoring the Sicilian mafia, the Cosa Nostra . However, Andreotti was acquitted on all charges.

The shooting of Il Divo took place in Rome, Naples , Palermo and Turin . On May 23, 2008, the film premiered at the Cannes International Film Festival , where it received the Jury Prize. It was then shown at numerous international festivals, such as the German premiere on June 21, 2008 at the Munich Film Festival or at the Toronto International Film Festival and the London Film Festival .

Giulio Andreotti, 1978

Andreotti reportedly told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica after a private screening of the film: “I'm not that cynical. This work is a villainous prank, a wickedness, a malicious film. ”The film critics, however, praised the work, which won numerous other awards, including seven times the most important Italian film prize, David di Donatello, and five times the Nastro d'Argento . Toni Servillo also received the European Film Award in the Best Actor category .

Reviews

"Less oriented towards verifiable facts, the cleverly composed film is a study of a man of power that is shaped by both aversion and fascination," said the lexicon of international film . The focus is more on "the criticism of a desolate political system". Il Divo is a film in the "tradition of the Italian political thriller", which at the same time ties in with "Shakespeare's royal dramas". Prisma particularly praised the camera work and the "terrific Toni Servillo" and saw Sorrentino's film as "a gripping portrait". Il Divo was shot "in the style of a political farce", sometimes moves "skillfully between clowning and political thriller" and can also present "tragic moments". For viewers interested in the topic, the film is "a bitter, top-class pleasure".

Rüdiger Suchsland wrote similarly positive about the film for the film service : "Sorrentino is masterfully staging modern politics as a classic royal drama". "Politics can be seen as a musical-like farce, as a power ballet choreographed with great elegance". According to Birgit Glombitza from the taz , “the analytical turns into anecdotal”, which makes the film “a comical political opera about Italy and its power Stronzos”. Bernd Teichmann vom Stern found it "funny, clever, evil and original".

Petra Reski von der Zeit stated that for the artistic exposure of evil “every shot of this film [looks] as if it was designed by a Japanese interior designer”, and concluded: “If you want to understand Italy, you have to see Il Divo .” Bert Rebhandl noted in the Berliner Zeitung that the film is not so much about Andreotti, but rather "a masterpiece about our ideas of power". You can also hear "one of the best soundtracks in recent film history", which alternates "between classical and electronic" and can come up with "a great punchline in the credits".
