International Football Cup 1966/67

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The 6th and final competition for the International Football Cup (IFC) was held between June 1966 and May 1967 . The following eleven European football associations took part:

After only eight associations took part in the previous year, the IFC, with the new associations from Belgium, France and Italy and now with 40 participating teams, found greater interest this time. The last edition of this competition was won by Eintracht Frankfurt . As the last winner of the competition, Eintracht could keep the trophy of the international soccer championship forever.

Preliminary remarks

As usual, the preliminary round, the quarter-finals and the semi-finals were played back and forth. Two departments had been formed, department A was divided into four groups and department B into six groups, each with four teams playing. There was no regional division this time, as in the previous year, so there were duels between the DFB and DFV again. The group winners each progressed one round. Since with Gornik Zabrze and Vorwärts Berlin two group winners were qualified for the European Champions Cup, they had to be eliminated from the competition according to IFC regulations. This brought the remaining eight teams to a regular quarter-finals. The cup winner was traditionally determined after the semi-finals in two finals. With Eintracht Frankfurt another German team won the cup. Since the UEFA meanwhile organized three other competitions in addition to the IFC with the championship, cup winners and trade fair cups, the participating associations increasingly ran into scheduling difficulties. Therefore, instead of the IFC for the 1967/68 season, the new Intertoto Cup was launched, which was only played in group games without an overall winner being determined.

The DFB had nominated the following five teams for the 1966/67 competition:

The DVF also competed with five teams:

Quarter finals

According to a UEFA rule, clubs that have competed in UEFA competitions (European Champion Clubs 'Cup; European Cup Winners' Cup) are not allowed to participate in any other tournament that exceeds the summer break. For this reason, Górnik Zabrze and FC Vorwärts Berlin were eliminated from the competition.
