Inverness Caledonian Thistle (officially: Inverness Caledonian Thistle Football Club ) - also known the Caley Jags - is a Scottish football club from Inverness .
history
The club emerged in 1994 as Caledonian Thistle FC from the merger of Caledonian FC and Inverness Thistle FC , both members of the Highland Football League , and occupied the vacant place in the Scottish Football League . The club changed the club name to Inverness Caledonian Thistle FC in 1996 at the request of the local city council .
After a promising start, Caley Thistle finished the first season in 1994/95 in 6th place in the third division . The following season was finished in 3rd place, 1996/97 ICT was able to finish the championship as first in the third division .
After two more seasons in the Second Division , the 2nd place was achieved in 1998/99 and promotion to the First Division was secured.
2003/04 is considered to be the most successful season in the club's history to date. In November 2003 Inverness defeated Airdrie United 2-0 thanks to goals from Steve Hislop and David Bingham, won the Challenge Cup and was able to advance to the semi-finals of the SFA Cup , where after a 1-1 lost to Dunfermline Athletic 3-2 in the second leg has been. On the last day of the match they defeated St. Johnstone 3-1 after goals from Paul Ritchie, David Bingham and Barry Wilson, taking Clyde the only promotion place on the home straight from and rose to the Scottish Premier League . However, according to the SPL statutes, each stadium must have a minimum of 10,000 seats. The Caledonian Stadium did not meet these guidelines, so the club's management had to decide whether to stay in the First Division - like Falkirk the previous season - or to share the stadium with Aberdeen FC, 150 kilometers away . After consulting with fans, the club's management decided that the Premier League football adventure was worth the temporary move to Aberdeen.
After a rule change by the SPL during the 2004/05 season, every first division club had to have a stadium with a capacity of 6000 or more spectators. After the erection of two new stands, the Caledonian Stadium lived up to these statutes and at the same time was renamed the “Tulloch Caledonian Stadium” in honor of the Tulloch construction company, which completed the work in just 47 working days. Tulloch's managing director, David Sutherland, was also President of Caley Thistle at the time . ICT returned with a 2-0 win on January 29, 2005 against Dunfermline after goals from Barry Wilson and the then player- coach Craig Brewster successfully back at home.
In the 2008/09 season, the club was relegated to the First Division after the last league game was lost 0-1 to direct rivals FC Falkirk . In the following year, the club managed to return directly to the top division.
In the 2012/13 season, the first qualification for the UEFA Europa League was narrowly missed by two defeats against Dundee United and Ross County at the end of the season. In the final table, the club took 4th place.
On May 30, 2015, Inverness Caledonian Thistle secured their first win of the Scottish FA Cup with a 2-1 win over FC Falkirk in Glasgow's Hampden Park . On the way to the final, ICT defeated record winner Celtic Glasgow in the semifinals. It is the greatest success in the club's history to date. As a Scottish Cup winner, the club took part in European cup competitions for the first time, but failed in the second qualifying round for the 2015/16 UEFA Europa League to Astra Giurgiu from Romania.
