The Scottish League Challenge Cup was played for the 27th time in 2017/18 . The Scottish football competition, which was officially held as the IRN-BRU Challenge Cup , began with the first round on August 15, 2017 and ended with the final on March 24, 2018. 56 clubs took part in the competition: 30 clubs from the Scottish Football League , 12 U-20 teams from the Scottish Premiership clubs, four clubs each from the Highland and Lowland Football League , and two clubs each from the Northern Irish NIFL Premiership , Irish League of Ireland and Welsh Premier League . The defending champion was Dundee United , who beat FC St. Mirren in the final last year . In this year's final, FC Dumbarton and Inverness Caledonian Thistle met . Dumbarton reached the Challenge Cup final for the first time, and the first national final in 121 years. Inverness took part for the fourth time after 2000 , 2004 and 2010 . Inverness won the final 1-0, the second time since 2004 the Challenge Cup.

1The game between Albion Rovers and FC Spartans originally ended 0-0 (5-4 on penalties). On August 16, the SPFL found that the Rovers had used the ineligible player Liam McGuigan , and disciplinary proceedings were initiated against the club accordingly. On August 24th, the Albion Rovers confessed their guilt and the result was taken as 3-0 for the Spartans. The Rovers also received a £ 2,000 fine.

2nd round

The 2nd round was drawn on August 17, 2017. From this round the six clubs from Ireland , Northern Ireland and Wales took part in the competition. The matches were held on August 29th and between September 1st and 3rd, 2017.
