The Scottish League Challenge Cup was played for the 28th time in 2018/19 . The Scottish football competition, which was officially held as the IRN-BRU Challenge Cup , began on July 31, 2018 and ended with the final on March 24, 2019. 58 clubs took part in the competition: 30 clubs from the Scottish Football League , 12 U- 21 teams from the clubs in the Scottish Premiership , four clubs each from the Highland and Lowland Football League , and two clubs each from the Northern Irish NIFL Premiership , Irish League of Ireland , Welsh Premier League and English National League . In contrast to the previous year, the SPFL announced some changes. The age limit for the B teams has been increased by one year and the extension has been abolished. If there was a tie after the regular game including stoppage time, a game was decided directly on penalties. The defending champion was Inverness Caledonian Thistle , who beat Dumbarton FC in the final last year . In this year's final, Ross County and Welsh club Connah's Quay Nomads met . Ross County reached the finals for the fifth time after 2005 , 2007 , 2009 and 2011 . The Staggies won the final 3-1 and thus the Challenge Cup for the third time.
