The Scottish League Challenge Cup was played for the 18th time in 2008/09 . The Scottish football competition, officially known as ALBA Challenge Cup was held, began on 26 July 2008 and ended with the final on 16 November 2008 at McDiarmid Park of Perth . The defending champion was St. Johnstone FC , who beat Dunfermline Athletic in the final last year . The clubs of the Scottish Football League took part in the competition. In this year's final, Airdrie United was able to prevail against Ross County and win the Challenge Cup for the first time in club history. Previously, they had lost the final in the 2003/04 edition against Inverness Caledonian Thistle .
