The Scottish football competition, which was officially held as the Challenge Cup , began on August 8, 1996 and ended with the final on November 3, 1996 at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld . The defending champion FC Stenhousemuir was eliminated in the first round against FC Dundee . In this year's final, FC Stranraer won the title against FC St. Johnstone .
