Jason A. Edwin (born June 24, 1981 in Saint Thomas ) is an American basketball player from the US Virgin Islands . After studying in the United States, Edwin worked as a professional for three years in Germany for Schalke 04 and the Paderborn Baskets in the first and second Bundesliga, before later playing mainly in Latin America and Asia . As a national player for the Virgin Islands, Edwin won two silver medals in the Centrobasket in 2006 and 2008 with the men's selection .

Career

Edwin was awarded a 1997 scholarship to graduate from high school in the motherland of the suburb. After graduating in Warsaw (Illinois) , he began studying at Saint Louis University in the city of the same name in neighboring Missouri , where he played for the college team Billikens in the Conference USA of NCAA Division I from 2000 . After two years, he left the team, which was given as a reason for the need to catch up in his academic achievements. He later continued his studies at Kent State University in Ohio and played after a year of mandatory competition break from 2003 for the college team Golden Flashes in the Mid-American Conference of the NCAA. Among his teammates were DeAndre Haynes and Nate Gerwig , who were later to play as professionals after Edwin, among others at the Paderborn Baskets. In the two years with Edwin, the Golden Flashes were able to qualify for the National Invitation Tournament in the " postseason ", in which, however, they were eliminated without a win in the first round.

After finishing his studies in 2005, Edwin got a contract in the German 2nd Basketball Bundesliga Group North with Schalke 04 from Gelsenkirchen . In the 2. Basketball Bundesliga 2005/06 Edwin scored an average of 25 points as the top scorer of his team and the team reached a secured midfield position as tenth in the final table. Although he had apparently recommended himself for higher tasks, he returned to the Schalke team for the 2006/07 2. Basketball Bundesliga , in which he was named Player of the Month in March 2007. In sixth place, the Schalke team achieved the best placement after returning to the second division and qualification for the new ProA class in the second division, which is subsequently hierarchically rather than geographically ordered. For the following season, Edwin moved within Westphalia to digibu Baskets from Paderborn , which had been promoted to the top German basketball division in 2006 . The team was able to confirm eleventh place from the promotion season in the basketball Bundesliga 2007/08 and achieved 16 wins in 34 games. Edwin could not shine individually in the higher division as before and achieved an average of almost six points in about 20 minutes of playing time per game, whereupon he no longer got a new contract.

With the national team of the American Virgin Islands, Edwin achieved second place behind host Jamaica in his second participation in the 2006 Caribbean Basketball Championships and qualified as a medal winner for the subsequent Centrobasket 2006 , where the selection after a runaway victory against the Dominican Republic in the Semifinals surprisingly defeated the high favorites Puerto Rico with one point difference. Edwin was the top scorer of his team in this game with 27 points and was able to convert the decisive throw from behind the three-point line to victory one second before the end of the game. The comparatively young selection lost the final against the more experienced selection of hosts Panama . As a medal winner of the Centrobasket you were also qualified for the Pan American Games in 2007 , where you finished eighth, and for the 2007 American Championship . At the start of the American Championship in Las Vegas, they suffered a disastrous 59: 123 defeat, in which they even won the second quarter, against the so-called "Redeem" team ( German reparation ), like the selection of the host and mother country in preparation the 2008 Olympics was designated. Interestingly enough, this designation was due to the fact that three years earlier the American selection had suffered three disgraceful tournament defeats at the 2004 Olympic Games with former team captain Tim Duncan , who was born in the US Virgin Islands and who was no longer part of the US national team and had only won the bronze medal. At the following games of the American Championship in 2007, the selection of the Virgin Islands was able to partially rehabilitate itself with narrow defeats, but remained without a win and clearly missed a qualification for the Olympic Games in last and tenth place. Edwin was one of the top three average scorers in the tournament with 21 points per game.

Also at the Centrobasket 2008 Edwin was again the top scorer in the selection of the American Virgin Islands, which again reached the final, which this time was lost to Puerto Rico. At the 2009 American Championships , the selection remained winless as tenth and last-placed team and missed the qualification for a global final at the 2010 World Cup again. After a ninth place at the Centrobasket 2010 one could only qualify for the Centrobasket 2012 with a tournament victory at the Caribbean Championships 2011 , which ended only slightly more successful after a single win over Costa Rica in seventh place. After his involvement with clubs in Germany, Edwin was later active as a professional in Syria , Mexico , Venezuela , Uruguay and most recently in Colombia in 2013 . His brother Deon, who is eleven years younger than him, will also begin his studies at Kent State in 2014, where he is also scheduled for the basketball team of the Golden Flashes, for which Jason's former teammate DeAndre Haynes is now assistant coach .
