Career

Azou began rowing in 2003. Just three years later, at the age of 17, he rowed to seventh place in the double sculls in the unrestricted weight class at the U19 World Championships . In his last year in the junior class, Azou also started at the Junior World Championships and finished fourth in the quadruple scull .

Apart from participating in the U23 World Championships in 2011, when he won a gold medal in the lightweight single, Azou only started in the lightweight area of the open age group from now on. His first participation in the Rowing World Cup dates back to 2008 in the Olympic boat class of lightweight double sculls . For the Olympic qualification Azou could not offer himself, so that he won the silver medal in the lightweight double foursome at the World Championships in Ottensheim, Austria.

In the new Olympic cycle, Azou mainly rowed in the Olympic double sculls. Together with the 13-year-old rower Frédéric Dufour , he won the silver medal in Poznan at the 2009 World Championships and with Rémi Di Girolamo the bronze medal at the 2010 European Championships in Portugal. With both partners he then started once at the World Championships in 2010 and 2011, but without reaching the A-final. In the regattas of the Rowing World Cup 2012, Azou found his way back to success with Stany Delayre , so that this duo was nominated for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The light French double scull took fourth place there, just under two seconds behind bronze.

With his new partner Delayre, Azou also competed at the 2013 European Championships in Seville, where he won his first international title in the open age group with the gold medal. At the World Cup of the same year , however, Azou took the easy single place and won the silver medal behind the Dane Henrik Stephansen . At the European Championships in 2014 , Delayre and Azou were able to start again in an easy double scull and defend their title. They finished the World Championships in Amsterdam on silver with a gap of 0.11 s behind the victorious boat from South Africa.

Delayre and Azou began the pre-Olympic season with their third consecutive European title at the European Championships in Poznan . At the world championships , which were held on Lac d'Aiguebelette not far from Azou's hometown Avignon, the French duo won the world title in the lightweight double scull for the first time. In 2016, Pierre Houin switched to Azou in the lightweight double scull. After winning the World Cup regattas in Lucerne and Poznan, the two won the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. For his Olympic victory he received the Knight's Cross of the Legion of Honor at the end of 2016 . At the European Championships in 2017, Houin and Azou won with over two seconds ahead of the Irish lightweight double scull, at the World Championships in Florida with a boat length ahead of the Italian boat.

Azou starts for the society Société nautique d'Avignon in his hometown. At a height of 1.78 m, his competition weight is around 70 kg.
