Joe Martin (bass player)
Joe Martin (born September 30, 1970 in Kansas City ) is an American modern jazz ( bass ) musician .
Live and act
Martin, who comes from a family of musicians (his father played the clarinet in the Des Moines Symphony , his mother was a violinist) and grew up in Pella, Iowa , began learning the cello at the age of seven . At the age of 15 he switched to the electric bass , to which the double bass was added during his school days . He attended DePaul University , where he continued his studies with Larry Gray in both classical and jazz. Then he moved to William Paterson College in New Jersey , where he was tutored by Todd Coolman , Rufus Reid and Harold Mabern and received his bachelor's degree with top marks in 1994.
Martin then moved to New York City, where he developed into one of the most sought-after bassists and played in the Mingus Big Band . For several years he belonged to Kurt Rosenwinkel's group , with whom he also recorded ( The Remedy ). He led his own groups with which he also published, played regularly in New York jazz clubs such as Smalls , Smoke or the Jazz Gallery and also toured internationally. He has also performed with musicians such as Andy Bey , Vinicius Cantuária , Bill Charlap , Anat Cohen , Avishai Cohen , Art Farmer , Aaron Goldberg , Jon Gordon , Ari Hoenig , Joel Frahm , Larry Goldings , Gilad Hekselman , Raphaël Imbert , Ethan Iverson , Lionel Loueke , John McNeil , Brad Mehldau , Ben Monder , Jane Monheit , Jean-Michel Pilc , Chris Potter , Maria Schneider , Jaleel Shaw , Grady Tate or Michael Weiss . In 2014 he was invited to the SWR New Jazz Meeting with Melissa Aldana , Jakob Bro , Kirk Knuffke , Jacob Sacks and RJ Miller . After Tom Lord he is involved in 66 recordings of jazz albums between 1992 and 2018.
Martin is a double bass professor at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College .
