Johann III. (Prague)

Johann III. (Czech: Jan. III. , † October 21, 1278 ) was Bishop of Prague .

Life

On his father's side, Johann came from a lower noble family. His mother was born in Dražice and was the sister of Bishop John II of Dražice .

After the death of the Prague bishop Nikolaus von Újezd , Johann was elected as his successor on February 1, 1258 and consecrated in Vienna on May 12, 1258 . He is said to have been a loyal supporter of the Bohemian King Ottokar II Přemysl and took part in his family celebrations and negotiations with political partners. In 1264 Johann inaugurated the King's Chapel on All Saints' Day at Prague Castle . In 1266 he received an order from Pope Clement IV to demand that Duke Heinrich von Niederbayern return the goods stolen from Archbishop Wladislaw of Salzburg . 1267 took part in the synod convened by the papal legate in Vienna, 1274 in the Second Council of Lyon .

He initiated various work on St. Vitus Cathedral : in 1269 the pulpit was erected and a year later the collapsed church tower was rebuilt, in 1276 the roof was covered with stone slabs and two new glass windows with scenes from the Old and New Testament were inserted.

Several monastery foundations go back to his tenure, including such important ones as Hohenfurth and Goldenkron . The episcopal chancellery founded by his predecessor was expanded. The documents from this time concern spiritual and economic matters.
