John O'Donoghue

John O'Donoghue ( Irish Seán Ó Donnchú , born May 28, 1956 in Cahersiveen , County Kerry ) is an Irish politician of the Fianna Fáil and has been a member of the Dáil Éireann , the lower house of the Irish Parliament , since 1987 .

biography

O'Donoghue studied law at University College Cork , where he received his Bachelor of Civil Law in 1976 and then his Bachelor of Laws in 1977 . In 1978 he became a consulting lawyer ( solicitor admitted) and worked as such in his hometown Cahersiveen.

O'Donoghue began his political career in 1981 when he first ran for the Fianna Fáil in the elections for the 22nd Dáil Éireann. However, he did not succeed in winning a mandate, and he did not succeed in the next two elections in February and November 1982. Instead, he was elected to Kerry County Council in 1985 and was a member until 1997. During this time he was also its chairman in 1990. In the elections for the 25th Dáil in 1987, O'Donoghue finally succeeded in being elected to the Dáil Éireann for the first time as a candidate for the Fianna Fáil.

Between November 1991 and February 1992 he was Minister of State under Taoiseach Charles Haughey at the Minister of Finance and as such was particularly responsible for public works. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern then appointed him Minister for Justice, Equality and Legal Reform on June 26, 1997. As part of a cabinet reshuffle, he took over the post of Minister for Art, Sports and Tourism on June 6, 2002.

After the general election of May 24, 2007 he was on June 14, 2007 as the successor of his party friend Rory O'Hanlon new chairman ( Ceann Comhairle ) of Dáil Éireann. On October 13, 2009, he resigned from his post after being criticized for controversial expense reports.

O'Donoghue is married and has two sons and a daughter.
