Jon Meade Huntsman junior (born March 26, 1960 in Palo Alto , California ) is an American politician and diplomat . The Republicans had 2,017 to 2,019 US ambassador to Moscow and from 2009 to 2011 Ambassador of the United States in the People's Republic of China ; previously he was the 16th governor of the state of Utah between 2005 and 2009  . Huntsman ran for Republican candidacy in the 2012 presidential election until he announced that he would end his candidacy on January 16, 2012 because of the disappointing results of the New Hampshire primaries.

Career

Huntsman's ancestors have lived in Utah for six generations. His grandfather was a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons), which includes Huntsman. Huntsman's father of the same name, Jon Huntsman Sr., is the founder of the Huntsman Corporation . He and his wife, Mary Kaye, have seven children, one each adopted from China and Bangladesh. His daughter Abby Huntsman is a journalist and co-host of the ABC telecast The View and 2016-2018 the Fox News telecast Fox & Friends .

Huntsman was a missionary in Taiwan , studying Mandarin Chinese . He studied at the University of Utah and then at the University of Pennsylvania , where he earned a bachelor's degree. He then embarked on a professional career as a businessman and became chairman of the Huntsman Corporation , a multinational chemical company based in Salt Lake City . He held his first political office as a member of the staff of US President Ronald Reagan . Under his successor George Bush , Huntsman served as Undersecretary in the Department of Commerce and as US Ambassador to Singapore from 1992 to 1993.

Prior to his election as governor of Utah in 2004, Huntsman held the post of US sales representative . In his first candidacy, he won 57 percent of the vote against the Democrat Scott Matheson; in November 2008 he was elected with 77 percent of the vote against Bob Springmeyer.

In 2009, Huntsman was nominated by President Barack Obama as US ambassador to the People's Republic of China. He took office in Beijing in August 2009; he was succeeded as governor of Utah by the previous lieutenant governor Gary R. Herbert . Huntsman announced his resignation from the post of ambassador on April 30, 2011, as he was running for the Republican candidacy in the 2012 presidential election . He was succeeded in Beijing by Gary Locke .

On January 15, 2014, Huntsman took over the chairmanship of the Atlantic Council , an influential institution for maintaining "US leadership" in international affairs with close ties to political decision-makers around the world.

US President Donald Trump nominated him on July 18, 2017 as the future United States Ambassador to Russia .

At the time of his appointment as US ambassador to Moscow, Huntsman was a member of the supervisory boards of the energy company Chevron , the automobile manufacturer Ford and the hotel chain Hilton . As with his post in Beijing, Huntsman resigned prematurely in Moscow. He was succeeded by John J. Sullivan .

On November 1, 2019, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo presented him with the Distinguished Service Award , the State Department's highest honor. Shortly thereafter, Huntsman stated that he would run for governor of Utah again in the November 2020 election. He would inherit his successor Gary Herbert, who is not running again.

Political positions

Huntsman signed a petition in 2013 advocating marriage for same-sex couples . Huntsman had previously spoken out against it for a long time. He spoke out against abortion , criticized Obamacare health care reform and advocated US gun law .
