Joseph Marquard Faithful

Jol Nathan (born December 25, 1712 in Bamberg; † June 8, 1796 ibid) was a son of the Bamberg court Jew Wolf Nathan. He converted to Catholicism in 1733 and took the name Joseph Marquard Treu . At the age of eight he received his first painting and drawing lessons from Johann Rudolf Byss . The painter and etcher later passed on his knowledge to his children Johann Nicolaus, Anna Maria, Christoph and Catharina. The daughter Rosalie married a pupil of her father, the painter Joseph Dorn . Joseph Marquard Treu worked in the reign of the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg and Würzburg, Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim and Franz Ludwig von Erthal . The latter supported him towards the end of his life by granting him a pension .

Johann Nicolaus (born May 16, 1734 in Bamberg, † 1786 in Würzburg ), the brother of Joseph Marquard Treu, specialized in portraiture.

Under Prince-Bishop Adam Friedrich von Seinsheim he came to Würzburg, where he worked as the Prince-Bishop's valet, court painter and gallery inspector. Among other things, the high altar painting of the Augustinian Church in Würzburg and the painting of the St. Nicholas altar in the Käppele come from him . In the Würzburg Residence he was involved in the painting equipment for the second guest room of the Northern Imperial Room.

Anna Maria Treu

Anna Maria (born July 26, 1736 in Bamberg; † 1786 ) mainly painted hunting pieces and miniature portraits. Her son Joseph Hemmerlein (1766–1838), a passionate violin player, laid the foundations for the collection of the Historisches Museum in Bamberg as an art collector .

Christoph Treu

Johann Joseph Christoph Treu (born October 15 or November 16, 1739 in Bamberg; † October 2, 1799 there ) was court painter from the Electorate of Cologne and director of the Schönbornische Gemäldegalerie in Weißenstein Castle in Pommersfelden .

Rosalie Faithful

(* February 18, 1741 in Bamberg; December 19, 1830 there ), married to Joseph Dorn , a student of her father , since 1786 . Is quoted in Thieme-Becker as a painter with the fact that her portraits of Hofrat Johann Alberich Ignaz Böttinger (1722–1772) and Count von Rotenhan were praised.

Catharina Treu

Catharina (born May 21, 1743 in Bamberg, † October 11, 1811 in Mannheim ) was best known for her magnificent still lifes . Based on Dutch models, she often painted them on oak boards. She received her first important commission in 1762 (over- porting in the Würzburg Residence), and in 1766 she was called to Bruchsal , where she completed commissions from Cardinal Franz Christoph von Hutten . In 1768 she went to his court in Düsseldorf on behalf of Elector Karl Theodor of the Palatinate and Bavaria . In 1769 she became the elector's cabinet painter at the Prince's second residence in Mannheim. Following orders for the English court, in 1776 Treu was the first woman to be appointed titular professor at the Art Academy in Düsseldorf and remained court painter to Elector Karl Theodor. Despite Karl Theodors moving to Munich in 1778, Mannheim remained loyal and in 1781 married the wealthy court farmer Jakob König from Schwetzingen. In 1785, shortly after the birth of her two daughters Franziska and Elisabeth, who both also became painters, she separated from her husband. After the loss of her main client, the Elector, who died in 1799, she received only a few orders. In the course of the coalition wars, their assets were also lost. Nevertheless, she died as a recognized painter. Her work is in the collections of Bruchsal, Mannheim, Düsseldorf, Bamberg and Würzburg.
