biography

After graduating from commercial school , Rieder attended the hotel management school in Bad Hofgastein and did not start skiing until relatively late. In the winter of 1952/53 he competed in international races for the first time, the following year he celebrated his first victory in the slalom of Val Gardena and achieved several other podium places. In the 1954/55 season he won giant slalom, slalom and combination of the 3-tre races in Canazei , the downhill in Cervinia and the giant slalom in Zakopane . At the famous Arlberg-Kandahar races in Mürren , he took second place in the downhill and fourth place in the combination. He finished sixth in the important runs on the Lauberhorn in Wengen and on the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel .

In January 1956 Rieder achieved his most important victory up to that point in the Lauberhorn combination with second place in downhill and slalom, in Kitzbühel he achieved second place in slalom and combined.
At the Olympic Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo in 1956, however, the Tyrolean was unlucky and retired both in the slalom, where he fell twice in the first round, by disqualification, and in the downhill (abandonment after a fall). In the further course of the season he was able to win the 3-tre slalom on the Marmolada on March 24th (also 2nd place on March 23rd and March 25th in Canazei) and the giant slalom in Saalfelden .

In the winter of 1957 Rieder repeated his victory in the Lauberhorn combination (also third place in the slalom on January 13th) and this time also won the Hahnenkamm combination with a victory in the slalom and third place in the downhill. He achieved a few more victories at the North American races : at the Quebec Cup in Mont Tremblant , he won two downhill runs, the slalom and the combination; at the "International Ski Championships of the USA" in Stowe on 15./16. March he won the slalom (also 3rd place in the downhill and second in combination) and the giant slalom in Portland .

In a rating by the “Arbeiterzeitung Wien”, he surprisingly came first in the overall ranking as “driving the most evenly”. At the beginning of 1958 he also worked as a trainer for the ÖSV , training the women's team on the Pfriemesköpfl near Innsbruck together with Toni Sailer .
He won the slalom on the Lauberhorn (2nd place in the combination behind Wallace Werner ) and came second in the Hahnenkamm downhill on January 18th. In a giant slalom in Saalfelden on January 26th, which was considered to be the “last” preparation for the World Championship, he finished third.

Slalom world champion 1958

At the 1958 World Championships in Bad Gastein , Rieder celebrated the greatest success of his career: with the fastest time in the second run, he secured the slalom world title ahead of Toni Sailer and the Japanese Chiharu Igaya , who had led after the first run. He was able to win the silver medal in the giant slalom and in the combination, both times only beaten by Toni Sailer, who won a total of three gold medals and was the big star of this World Cup.
In the election for “Austrian Sportsman of the Year 1958”, he finished second with 536 points behind Toni Sailer (634).
In the 1958/59 season Rieder celebrated his last victory in the giant slalom on the Zugspitze and gradually withdrew from racing.

Coaching

After his active career, the Tyrolean worked as a coach for a few years and looked after the Spanish team at the 1960 Winter Olympics . He then became head coach of the Austrian ski men, with whom he celebrated great success at the 1962 World Cup .
He was given a special honor when he was allowed to light the Olympic flame in
Innsbruck's Bergisel Stadium at the 1964 Winter Olympics .

He had a bad experience on March 13, 1968, when he was skiing to friends in the municipality of Lermoos around noon and was hit by a 30 m wide avalanche. He lost consciousness but was freed by comrades.
