The King Fahd Stadium ( Arabic ملعب الملك فهد الدولي, DMG Malʿab al-malik Fahd ad-duwalī ; English King Fahd International Stadium ) is a football stadium with an athletics facility in Riyadh , the capital of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia . The building is located northeast of the city. The building was named after King Fahd ibn Abd al-Aziz . The monarch was head of state of Saudi Arabia from 1982 until his death in 2005 .

The stadium was opened in 1987 and serves as the national stadium for the Saudi Arabian national soccer team . The stadium now holds 68,752 spectators, making it the largest in Saudi Arabia . The Saudi Arabian first division soccer teams Al-Hilal , Al-Nasr and Al-Shabab play their home games in this stadium, which, with its tent-like roof, is reminiscent of the Munich Olympic Stadium .

The sports facility was designed by the London architects Ian Fraser, John Roberts and Partners . The tent roof construction remains unchanged. Several parks and squares as well as an artificial hill are planned around the stadium.
