Cabinet Messmer III

The Messmer III cabinet was formed on February 28, 1974, after Pierre Messmer was reappointed Prime Minister of France on February 28, 1974 . During his term in office, President Georges Pompidou died on April 2, 1974 , so that initially the President of the Senate , Alain Poher , became President of the Republic ad interim in accordance with Article 7 of the Constitution and early presidential elections had to take place on May 5 and 19, 1974 those of the previous Minister for Economy and Finance Valéry Giscard d'Estaing as the winner over François Mitterrandemerged. The previous Minister of Post and Telecommunications Jean Royer , who resigned on April 11, 1974, had also run for the office of President of the Republic, but in the first ballot on May 5, 1974, with 3.17 percent, was only fourth among the twelve Candidates. The third Messmer government remained in office until May 28, 1974, when it was replaced by the Chirac I cabinet after President Giscard d'Estaing appointed Jacques Chirac as the new Prime Minister.
