Caricature Charivari with the purpose of marriage is a farce with singing in three acts by Johann Nestroy . The first performance took place anonymously on April 1, 1850 in the Vienna Carltheater .
The title refers to Charivari (from the Latin caribaria , confusion), a jewelry chain for traditional lederhosen , particularly popular in Bavaria , which is provided with various pendants. In the 19th century it also had the broader meaning of cat music .

Adolf Flamm and Marie love each other, but Marie's guardian Muffinger is determined to marry his ward to his son Isidor in order to continue to secure access to their 150,000 guilders assets. Isidor, who was not at all enthusiastic about the wedding with Marie, and his father chase after the cook Kathi. When her husband Finkl suddenly shows up, he has to dress up as Kathi's mother, as a married cook would not be tolerated. Finkl doubts his wife's loyalty during his absence:
- "We are alone, the motherly duties have an end, now we will discuss the rights of the husband." (First act, twelfth scene)
Nevertheless, Finkl wants to help Marie and Adolf each other in the hope of a rich reward. Disguised as a cartoon character “Barnabas Wühlhuber” he pretends to stab Adolf in a duel and then pretends to be Marie's lover to Muffinger. But this then tightened the guarding of Marie even more.
Disguised as a “tragic heroine”, Finkl makes the next attempt to give the two lovers a rendezvous. Immediately afterwards he appears as "Kasimir Heulmeyer", the alleged father of the heroine, and makes Muffinger leave his house. The bribed house servant Kajetan lets them all escape, Marie finds shelter with Adolf's aunt. Isidore is very pleased:
- “Can a man condemned to marry get pardon in a nicer way than me ?! The bride goes through - that is the most comprehensive amnesty for a copulation-engraved. " (Second act, twentieth scene)
Now Finkl disguises himself as "forest farmer and Urähndl" Kathis and takes them away with him. In a country inn, everyone is waiting for Isidore to bring the will that Muffinger has retained in favor of Marie. But Muffinger has taken it from his son again, but he is overwhelmed by a ruse by Finkl's servants and locked in the cellar. Disguised as a "state hemorrhoidarius", Finkl causes Kajetan to denounce his master as a robber. In his fear, Muffinger pulls out Marie's father's will, which proves his attempted embezzlement. Adolf gets his Marie and says contemptuously about Muffinger:
- "This is how we recognize the cunning, greedy guardian!" (Third act, twenty-eighth scene)
Factory history and contemporary reception
A specific source for Nestroy's piece cannot be determined, all motifs and also the basic idea belonged to the traditional repertoire of the farce back then.
The failure of the work was so blatant at the premiere that it was never repeated, because the audience protested loudly and there was not a single vote in favor of the work in the magazines. Hebenreit's music was also described as “less than mediocre” (quote).
Even the usually always Nestroy-friendly Wiener Theater Zeitung of Adolf Bäuerle ranked it
- "[...] in the number of completely worthless, totally unsuccessful antics. [...] More meaningless, less motivated and incoherent than on this evening has probably not been served to the audience for decades. "
The humorist of Moritz Gottlieb Saphir pointed bluntly Nestroy authorship and etched:
- "And yet the play was a scandal to annoy, and yet this wretched, senseless and meaningless, witless and intellectually poor work, which was pieced together by a hand already lost for the stage from outdated scenes and intrigues from the junk room of all pieces, a mockery for the lured audience, which however paid with the same coin. [...] The couplets , which Mr. Nestroy performed with great persistence, are the most terrible thing we have ever heard. [...] If Nestroy is the creator of this farce (?) (?), It could not have been any more foul. "
Johann Nestroy played the Haftelmacher Finkl, Wenzel Scholz the house servant Kajetan, Alois Grois the capitalist Muffinger.
A manuscript of 34 double sheets without a title page in Nestroy's pencil handwriting with previous censorship corrections in red ink has been preserved, as well as a fair copy of the song text and other manuscript fragments.
Later interpretations
When Otto Rommel , the performance is classified as a total failure, because if it were merely a "worthless confusion farce in which he [Nestroy] often came to a custom of the time, according to which at that time Eisele and Beisele on stage caricatures from the, flying Scroll '(Barnabas Wühlhuber, crybaby and Staatshämorrhoidarius ) occur can " (quote).
Helmut Ahrens briefly notes that the four premieres of 1850 in the Carltheater, namely you shouldn't have him , cartoon charivari with the purpose of marriage , everything wants to see the prophet and a complicated story! had suffered diarrhea - all of them together would be just “comedians on the back burner” (quote).
