Factory history

For the Theater an der Wien, this one-act play was announced as the third part of a one-act evening with the note "comic series of scenes in 1 act, compiled by Johann Nestroy" on the theater bill. The event took place "for the benefit of the Institute of the Sisters of Mercy " , the still existing hospital of the Sisters of Mercy in Gumpendorf . On this evening the Empress mother, two archdukes with their sons and the Prince of Salerno , Leopold of Naples-Sicily , were present from the imperial family .

The text is lost, from the playbill it can be seen that Nestroy played the farm boy Dappl and the servant Stock, Alois Grois played the carter bike shoe and the impresario Quiriquaggio, and Wenzel Scholz played the head waiter Konrad.

The other one-act plays were the melodrama The Fourth and Twentieth February by Zacharias Werner (1768–1823), in which the court actor Carl von La Roche took part, the lieder play The female triplets by Karl von Holtei , who also played, followed by Nestroy's one-act play, The conclusion was formed by two tableaux vivants (living pictures), arranged by the academic painter Johann Matthias Ranftl : The courtship and the improviser .

Contemporary reception

The theater evening was well attended, but received mixed feedback. Usually only the good cause, the acting achievements and the presence of members of the imperial family were positively mentioned, the contents of the plays received different evaluations.

The collector wrote in great detail on May 5, 1842 (No. 72, p. 301), particularly describing the performance of the actors:

“'The events in the inn' consisted of three scenes from different plays, in which the three main comic forces of this stage, the HH. Nestroy, Scholz and Grois, found an opportunity to receive an award and all of them received ample recognition. The former was called out repeatedly after the delightful presentation of his Quodlibet. "

A very positive review was to be read in the collector of the same day (No. 107, p. 428). The humorist of Moritz Gottlieb Saphir avoided any criticism by he referred to the charity. Holtei was praised in the Viennese magazine , the other pieces - including Nestroy's work - heavily criticized. The Allgemeine Wiener Musikzeitung found the performance on the whole quite successful, but highlighted Holtei's lieder play against the local posse as being of higher quality.

The Wiener Theater Zeitung of Adolf Bäuerle other hand, praised on 6 May (no. 108, f p.477.) Just Nestroy piece especially, with the reviewer the poet as the "far most talented [n] disciples of such famous Viennese comic Folk Theater in the main now their last anchor " designated.
