Karl-Markus Gauss
Karl-Markus Gauß (born May 14, 1954 in Salzburg ) is an Austrian writer . He lives in Salzburg as an essayist , critic and editor of the journal Literature and Criticism .
Life
Karl-Markus Gauß comes from a Danube Swabian family, his father was the publisher and folklorist Adalbert Karl Gauß . He studied German language and literature and history in Salzburg and emerged early on through literary essays, which he published primarily in the Vienna Diary . As editor, he and Ludwig Hartinger supervised the (incomplete) edition of Ernst Fischer's work at Sendler Verlag in Frankfurt.
Since 1991 Gauß has been the publisher and editor-in-chief of the literary magazine Literatur und Critique . Gauss' topics are also reflected in this magazine. He also writes for the Süddeutsche Zeitung (in which he has a column), the Neue Zürcher Zeitung and regularly in many Austrian newspapers and magazines.
At the end of 2006, Gauß was accepted as a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry . In 2007 he received an honorary doctorate in philosophy from Salzburg University .
plant
Gauss is primarily characterized by his essays. In them he takes a stand for a human world; Very concise and stylistically versed, he highlights the various paradoxes and perversions of modern life without falling into cultural pessimism . A recurring theme is the rapprochement with national minorities and ethnic groups ( e.g. Arbëreshe , Aromanians , Gottscheer- Germans, Roma , Sephardi of Sarajevo and Sorbs ). Other topics are Central and Southeastern Europe . Gauß has traveled to these regions many times for his books, often together with the photographer Kurt Kaindl .
His travel reports deal with cultural encounters, exchanges with intellectuals and writers as well as with people on the street and in inns. In his essays as well as in travel reports and journals , Gauß often introduces little-known Central and Eastern European writers in Austria.
