Karl von Hymmen (born January 15, 1824 in Düsseldorf , † March 28, 1897 in Wiesbaden ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

Charles was a son of the Lord House Hain Franz von Hymmen (1788-1857) and his wife Agnes, nee von Ammon (1791-1856).

Military career

Hymmen graduated from high school in Düsseldorf and then attended the Berlin cadet house . On January 21, 1842, he was the 11th Hussars Regiment of the Prussian army paid and received in mid-April 1845 character as a second lieutenant . The patent was granted to him in mid-July 1846. In 1849 Hymmen took part in the battles at Viuf , Alminde , Vejle and Horsens during the war against Denmark . After being appointed regimental adjutant at the beginning of December 1850, Hymmen became a premier lieutenant in mid-July 1856 and from September 1857 to June 1859 he was in command of the 11th Landwehr Hussar Regiment as squadron leader. In this position he advanced to Rittmeister at the beginning of December 1858 . During the mobilization on the occasion of the Sardinian War , Hymmen was adjutant of the 7th Cavalry Division and acted as the leader of the replacement squadron of his regiment from late August 1859 to late September 1860. After serving as a squadron chief , Hymmen was transferred to the Magdeburg Hussar Regiment No. 10 on January 9, 1864 and commanded as an adjutant at the General Command of the VII Army Corps . With the appointment as chief of the 3rd squadron in Aschersleben , he returned to the troop service in mid-October 1864 and rose to major in mid-May 1866 . Hymmen led his squadron in the following war against Austria mainly with the avant-garde and took part in the battles at Münchengrätz , Königgrätz and Pressburg . At Blumenau he rode an attack on an enemy squadron of Uhlans, was wounded in the face by a saber blow and remained with his troops bleeding profusely. For his work, after the peace treaty, Hymmen received the order Pour le Mérite at the suggestion of his commanding General von Fransecky and was transferred to the Guard Hussar Regiment as a regular staff officer at the end of October 1866 . On March 6, 1868, King Wilhelm I appointed him his wing adjutant . In this capacity he was promoted to lieutenant colonel at the end of March 1868 and on July 28, 1868, while remaining in his position as a wing adjutant, he became the commander of the Hussar Guard Regiment.

This regiment led Hymmen in the war against France in 1870/71 at Gravelotte , Beaumont , Sedan , Bapaume and Saint-Quentin as well as before Paris and Péronne . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was promoted to colonel after the peace treaty in mid-August 1871 . At the end of March 1873, Hymmen received the Knight's Cross of the Royal House Order of Hohenzollern , was appointed to represent the commander of the 6th Cavalry Brigade in mid-June 1874 , and on August 15, 1874, under position à la suite of his regiment, he was commander of the brigade in Brandenburg an der Havel appointed. Hymmen had married Eleonore Lorck (1831-1918) on August 10, 1852 in Hamburg . The daughter Sigrid (* 1853), who married Hilmar von Münchhausen († 1893) in 1873 , and the son Albert (1856–1861) emerged from the marriage.
