Career
Jones played during his junior years in the lower leagues of the province of Ontario with the Paris Mounties and Niagara Falls Canucks . Nevertheless, he was selected in the 1988 NHL Entry Draft in the seventh round in 141st place by the Washington Capitals . Despite his age of almost 20 years, the attacker did not switch to the professional field in the fall of 1988, but pursued a degree at Western Michigan University . During his four years there until 1992 he played parallel for the ice hockey team of the university in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association , a division of the National Collegiate Athletic Association . Jones played there with Mike Eastwood for the first three years . In his final season, Jones was the team's top scorer and was named to the CCHA's First All-Star team.
Before the end of the 1991/92 season, the now 23-year-old switched to the professional field and played for the Baltimore Skipjacks . The Skipjacks were the Washington Capitals farm team in the American Hockey League at the time . It was there that Jones began the 1992/93 season , but was soon appointed to the Capitals NHL squad due to his performance. Until shortly after the start of the 1996/97 season , the power forward stayed in the capital, but injuries kept throwing it back, so that the hopes of the Capitals were not fulfilled. On November 2, 1996 Jones was given together with a first-round and four-round suffrage in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Chris Simon and Curtis Leschyshyn to the Colorado Avalanche . A protracted knee injury caused Jones to miss the games from the second round of the Stanley Cup - 1997 play-offs and large parts of the 1997/98 game year . He only returned to the Avalanche squad fully recovered in the 1998/99 season , but they were no longer used for the striker. On November 12, 1998, they exchanged Jones for Shjon Podein of the Philadelphia Flyers .
In the Flyers, the winger found his way back to his old strength and completed his most successful year with 53 points from all games of the season. Shortly after the start of the 2000/01 season , Jones had to end his career. On November 21, 2000, he announced his official retirement from active sports.
Since 2005 he has been working as an NHL expert, including for the television stations Versus , TSN and Comcast SportsNet .
