License plate (Turkmenistan)
The license plate of Turkmenistan have black lettering on a white background in general. They correspond to the European standard and show the flag of Turkmenistan and the letters TM on the left edge . The combination starts with one or two (since 2009) letters, followed by four digits. At the end, two more letters indicate the province in which the vehicle was registered. A slight modification of the German DIN font is used as the font, mostly with a combination of middle and narrow letters .
Marks for foreigners have a yellow background. After a number they show the letter H and a consecutive five-digit number. Diplomatic license plates have a blue base color and white characters. Their combination consists of coding the country of origin using two digits, the letters CD and a consecutive number.
License plates with a dark green background are issued for authorities and military facilities. They show elements of the Turkmen flag and the letters TM on the far left . This is followed by four digits, the region code and another letter. Military license plates do without the regional letters and instead show the combination GM . Green license plates with the words DABARA were used during the parade marking the 20th anniversary of independence .
As part of the Soviet Union , the Turkmen SSR used Soviet license plates . The current labeling system was introduced in 1994, three years after independence.
