The Kirchbach is an approx. 6 km long brook in the Steigerwald foreland predominantly in the area of the village district of Hellmitzheim of Iphofen in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen , which flows into the Breitbach from the right after an approx. 6 km long, mainly west-southwest run near Mönchsondheim . The Kirchbach is a 3rd order flowing water all year round .

geography

Right main strand upper course

The right main course upper course of the Kirchbach rises in an unsteady course about 300 m northeast of the desert Seehof on the B 8 at the beginning of a small eastern corridor on both sides of the road into the Steigerwald at about 323  m above sea level. NHN . Between the Seehof on the right and the Gänsbuckel ( 334  m above sea level ) on the left, crowned by a small forest, it flows southeast and under the main road for almost its first kilometer towards the Mönchsondheimer Holz forest . Where it has reached its edge, the district border with Middle Franconia is only less than half a kilometer further east, it turns around 320  m above sea level. NHN by about 135 ° to the right and now runs along the edge of the forest to the southwest, from now on always in the vicinity of a field path. After a hundred and fifty meters a short course of water flows out of the forest, from here it leads to constant water. Shortly before the embankment of the Nuremberg – Würzburg railway line , two seldom flow-through ditches drain the nearby gypsum quarry and the stream flows through a formerly damp depression in which a pond it fed was created in the 1980s. After a short parallel run to the embankment, it crosses under it in the old direction and then unites after about 2.3 km at about 303  m above sea level. NHN with the other branch of the upper course.

Left branch upper course

This stream, also called Kirchbach, is fed by surface water from the Dornlaub forest in the southeast of Hellmitzheim and does not carry water all year round in the upper reaches; about a quarter of a kilometer above the beginning of the ditch at the edge of the forest at about 320  m above sea level. NHN lies in the forest, the almost half-hectare-sized Spitzsee. This source branch, which is about 1.6 km from the edge of the forest, flows roughly north-west, but mostly along field boundaries in a fairly angular course. The Zettelbach rises only about 300 m to the west and flows to the Breitbach to the west.

Further course

After the two upper stretches south of the railway line have merged, the Kirchbach initially runs slightly northwest parallel to it and then, after a bend to the southwest, passes the gypsum karst springs Kleines and Großes Grundlos . There, sulphatic water emerges from the karstified gypsum ground in two spring pools , which flow into the Kirchbach after a few meters. Both sources and parts of the stream are under nature protection . The source is identified by the Bavarian State Office for the Environment as geotope 675Q001.

After a short distance, the stream reaches the edge of the settlement of Hellmitzheim and flows through the north of the parish village away from the old town center in a gentle valley cut straight to the west. At first it crosses two village ponds, which are now almost completely silted up, at a small bridge, then the one-yoke round arch bridge made of sandstone from the former main and today's Helmboldstraße spans it.

After the lower town limit, the hollow begins to sink into the small valley and the brook passes the Obere Dorfmühle near Hellmitzheim under Mönchsondheimer Strasse and now runs south-west; the road accompanies him from here over the right slope to the mouth. Further down at the plank mill , also known as the lower mill , the course of the stream was artificially changed in earlier times for use as a mill drive; About a quarter of a kilometer from this wasteland, the valley is very overgrown. After the mill, it opens again, the Kirchbach runs in two wide arches in a deep valley almost to the west, passes a group of ponds, and then flows south of 293  m above sea level. NHN high lower Talsporns Unzenberg close to the southeast edge of Mönchsondheim at about 260  m above sea level. NHN in the Breitbach .

The Kirchbach has a length of 6.3 km on its main line with the right upper course, an absolute gradient of about 63 meters and thus a mean bed gradient of about 10 ‰.

Catchment area

It covers about 7.5 km² and is located in the Hellmitzheim Bay in front of the western Steigerwald in the sub-area of the Steigerwald foreland of the Mainfränkische Platten natural area . The highest elevation in the catchment area is at its southern tip Im Dornlaub and reaches a height of about 350  m above sea level. NHN .

The bay is located on a larger watershed, the waters east of it - the main competitor is the Bibart - ultimately run in the old Danubian direction south-east into the Aisch , which also drains into the Main via the Regnitz , but into the Upper Main with a major detour through Middle and Upper Franconia. In contrast, the Kirchbach and its neighboring streams on the other side of the northern and southern watershed - the Markt Einersheimer Moorseebach in the north and the Zettelbach in the south - drain from west to south-west to the Breitbach on a very short path to the Main Triangle, which lies much further down the great Franconian river .

The noticeably sharp bend of the right upper course on the northern edge of the Mönchsondheimer Holz on the very low watershed to the Bibart indicates a recent stream tapping by the Kirchbach, which is more erosive than the Bibart.

The headwaters of the Kirchbach are located in the LSG landscape protection area within the Steigerwald nature park (formerly the protection zone) LSG-00569.01 and thus within the Steigerwald nature park .

Geologically, the upper parts of the catchment area are in Gipskeuper , the lower parts in Unterkeuper .
