The Kristiansand-Kjevik Airport is the airport of the Norwegian central city Kristiansand .

Location and transport links

Kristiansand Airport is eight kilometers northeast of central Kristiansand; the journey time is 15–20 minutes.

Airport buses run to and from Kristiansand , Lillesand , Grimstad and Arendal .

history

The construction of the airfield on Kongsgårdsletta had originally been approved and started there, but it turned out that construction in Kjevik was more convenient and the buildings were moved there.

The expansion began in 1938 and the airfield was officially opened on June 1, 1939 with a concrete runway of 1000 m. In addition to the land airfield, a separate sea airport was also created. In the same year, Oslo-Fornebu Airport was opened. The first Norwegian land airport, Stavanger-Sola , had been completed two years earlier.

The first aircraft to land in Kjevik, was a Douglas DC-2 of KLM on its way from Oslo to Amsterdam .

Kjevik in World War II

On April 9, 1940, the airfield was only moderately guarded. After being bombarded by German planes and rumors of advancing German troops, the guards decided to retreat after blocking the runway with barbed wire and Spanish horsemen. In the afternoon, around 4.30 p.m., a Junkers Ju 52 that had participated in the attack on Sola managed to land. The airfield was quickly reinforced, and by April 12, 30 Messerschmitt Bf 109 E were stationed. During the remainder of the war, the airfield played an important role for the German armed forces in occupied Norway .

post war period

At the beginning of the war the airfield was owned by the city of Kristiansand. In 1946 it was transferred to the state free of charge. Eventually it was expanded and the runway paved.

Airport facilities

Start-and runway

The airport has a runway of 2030 × 45 m, but due to current regulations only 1870 m of this can be used.

Others

Kjevik Airport has only limited expansion options and is often inaccessible due to fog.

The air force training center Kjevik is connected to Kristiansand Airport.

Airlines and Destinations

Around 15 airlines (as of March 2014) offer (partly seasonal) connections in Germany, within Scandinavia and within Europe. Flights to international hubs exist to Oslo , Copenhagen , London-Stansted and Amsterdam .
