Konradshöhe

Konradshöhe is a district in the Reinickendorf district of Berlin and is located on the Tegeler Forst on the Havel and Tegeler See . In the southern area, Tegelort belongs to Konradshöhe, which has a village character. Road connections lead to Tegel and via Heiligensee to the federal highway 111 . There is also a car ferry connection to Hakenfelde ( Spandau district ). In Konradshöhe there is, among other things, the Jesus Christ Church .

History of origin

In the course of the northern expansion of Berlin, many city dwellers settled in the suburbs, which were attracted by the proximity to nature and the low land prices. One of them was the master coppersmith August Friedrich Theodor Rohmann. In 1865 he bought a plot of land on the Havel for the construction of a copper mill from a farmer who sold the unprofitable land for his and Rohmann's advantage. 20 acres (50,000 m²) changed hands  for 1000  thalers . The property comprised the street block Falkenhorststrasse, Nußhäterstrasse, Schwarzspechtweg and the Havel.

On November 22, 1865, Rohmann applied for a building permit for a coppersmith's shop, as well as a residential building with cellars, stable, coach house and surrounding wall, which was rejected on the grounds that the plans did not comply with fire safety regulations. Regardless of this, Rohmann began construction in November 1865 and was not deterred by a construction freeze order and a contractual penalty . When, after three years, the office of the Spandau district granted the building permit, the coppersmith was already in place. On October 20, 1868, the royal district president of Potsdam allowed him to name the homestead after his son Conradshöhe , who was born here , thus creating the basis for the Konradshöhe colony.

During the dispute with the authorities, Rohmann expanded his property by a further 24 acres. On the current block of streets Stößerstraße, Falkenplatz, Falkenhorststraße and the Havel, a boiler house with a 20-meter-high chimney was built next to the coppersmith's shop . He called his factory Dampfwerk for iron screw connections and apparatus rings .

In 1891, Rohmann converted his property into a restaurant because the metal industry was not flourishing. The forge, boiler house and stable became restoration rooms, which were opened as Konradshöher Terraces .

The sale of parcels in Konradshöhe resulted in a small settlement around the terraces. On November 8, 1902, Rohmann committed suicide because of a severe cardiac asthma disease. His son Conrad had died before him. In 1906 his widow sold the remaining properties and the Konradshöher Terrassen restaurant for 75,000  marks . In 1918 Wilhelm Reinhold acquired the property, whose son Herbert rebuilt it around 1937 and reopened it under the name Feen-Grotte , because the interior resembled a stalactite cave . This restaurant at Steinadlerpfad 15 remained in family ownership for three generations until it was sold to a construction company from Hanover in 1979 . In September 1979 the popular excursion and vaudeville pub and the oldest building in Konradshöhe was demolished. Semi-detached houses and condominiums were built there.

A passenger ship of the Wilfried Vogt shipping company called Feen-Grotte , which was put into operation in 1961 and which is anchored at the height of the former restaurant area, still reminds of the birthplace of this former colony.

Konradshöhe was recommended as a summer retreat as early as 1915 because it was characterized by good, ozone-rich air. The term 'climatic health resort', which appeared around 1955 but was never officially classified, remained in the linguistic usage of the inhabitants for a long time.

The most important structural measure of the founding years was the commissioning of the tram of the municipality Heiligensee an der Havel in May 1913 , the southern branch of which led from Tegel via Konradshöhe to Tegelort. In 1920 this was integrated into the network of the Berlin tram , the line was given the number 28. The line was expanded to two tracks in 1925. A wooden waiting hall on Falkenplatz, built in 1926, survived until 2011. The railway line itself was set on May 31, 1958.

Around 1921, the Konradshöhe colony received its typical bird street names. In 1924 it was connected to the city's electricity network and a year later it was connected to the city's water supply.

Erich Rudolf Otto Rosenthal, alias Billy Jenkins , who became known as a “ cowboy artist” and hero of the novel, ran a farm at Habichtstrasse 8, where he trained birds of prey .

Falkenplatz

The central location of Konradshöhe is the Falkenplatz, on which there is a small park with a playground. Mainly the young people of the district meet here, especially those who live in the neighboring child and youth welfare center Haus Conradshöhe . In addition, there are numerous shops on Falkenplatz, from flower shops to bookshops and grocery stores. In the middle of the park a memorial stone was erected in 1946 by the Association of Victims of the Nazi Regime, dedicated to the resistance fighters Albert Brust from Tegelort (executed on September 26, 1944) and Richard Neumann from Konradshöhe (shot by the SS on April 26, 1945).
