geography

location

The district was in the northeast of the Leipzig district , halfway between the trade fair city and Berlin.

Neighboring areas

The Torgau district bordered clockwise in the northwest, beginning with the districts of Wittenberg ( Halle district ), Jessen , Herzberg and Bad Liebenwerda ( Cottbus district ), Oschatz , Wurzen and Eilenburg ( Leipzig district ).

Natural space

The district stretched from Mühlberg to Dommitzsch on both sides of the Elbe and merged with the sandy hill country of the Düben - Dahlener Heide in the west and the sandy plains of the Annaburg Heath in the east . About a third of the area was made up of pine and mixed forests. The highest point was the Schildauer Berg (217 m). The large pond (299 ha) was laid out in 1483 to the south-east of Torgau for fish farming. The Dahlener Heide was a protected landscape area .

history

The law on the further democratization of the structure and functioning of the state organs in the states of the German Democratic Republic of July 23, 1952 resulted in an extensive district reform in the GDR and the five remaining states . On July 25, 1952, the federal states were dissolved and 14 districts were established. Here traditional circles were dissolved or divided into smaller circles, whereby there were also changes of area beyond the borders of the former 5 countries. The Torgau district was assigned to the Leipzig district , the city of Torgau became the seat of the district .

The Torgau district gave up 24 of its 69 municipalities:

Falkenberg, Pressel, Schöna, Strelln, Wildenhain and Wildschütz
Paußnitz, Schirmeitz and Wohlau
Beyern, Döbrichau, Löhsten, Rehfeld, Züllsdorf
Annaburg, Axien, Bethau, Hohndorf, Labrun, Lebien, Naundorf b. Prettin, Plossig, Purzien and Prettin.

In return, he received four municipalities from Saxony-Anhalt, namely:

Blumberg and Stehla
Dahlenberg and Wörblitz.
  • 45 communities remained in the old district of Torgau and thus formed the new district of Torgau with the 5 former Saxony-Anhalt communities :

On August 1, 1994 it was merged with the district of Oschatz to form the district of Torgau-Oschatz in the course of the district reform of Saxony in 1994/1996 .

Economy and Transport

The Torgau district was shaped by agriculture and forestry. The most important industrial company was the Torgau-based VEB Flachglas Kombinat . The Elbhafen (with an annual turnover of 400,000 t), the long-distance roads F 182 (Wittenberg – Dresden) and F 87 (Leipzig – Cottbus) as well as the Leipzig – Cottbus railways to Wittenberg and Belgern made Torgau a transport hub.

After 1952, the vehicles registered in the district were given license plates beginning with the letter S (as in the entire Leipzig district). Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the pair of letters SY from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was SY 80-01 to SY 99-99 .

At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinguishing mark TG . It was issued until December 31, 1994. It has been available again in the northern Saxony district since November 9, 2012 .
