Kretschmer
Kretschmer or Kretzschmer is a German family name. It is derived from a West Slavic word for "innkeeper" ( Sorbian korčmar , Czech krčmář ) and has been in German since the 14th century.
In Silesian history, the Kretschmer was a pub brewer who sold the beers he had brewed in his own tavern. As the owner of the brewery, he often held the function of the community leader.
The name is common in general, but has high concentrations especially in the Saxon Upper Lusatia , the area of origin of the name variant.
