Black Butler - A devil from a butler (2014)

Black Butler ( Japanese 黒 執事 , Kuroshitsuji , Eng. "Black Butler") is a manga written and drawn by Yana Toboso . It was first published in September 2006 within the Shōnen manga magazine Gekkan GFantasy . The ongoing manga was adapted by A-1 Pictures in 2008 as an anime television series of the same name , which received three sequels in 2010 and 2014. In addition, a live action film based on the manga, three musicals and, in 2017, an anime feature film entitled Black Butler: Book of the Atlantic were released in Japan .

action

The manga and anime are about the lives of 12-year-old Briton Ciel Phantomhive and his butler Sebastian Michaelis in the 19th century, the Victorian era . In his childhood, Ciel lost his parents in a fire, where he himself was kidnapped by a sect and abused for a month for occult ceremonies. Ciel's hatred of those who mistreated him conjures up a demon with whom Ciel concludes a contract. From now on, this demon is supposed to act as his butler under the name Sebastian Michaelis, never to lie to him, to act as his shield and sword and to obey his every command. In return, Sebastian receives Ciel's soul as soon as he has taken his revenge on those who humiliated him.

Characters

Cosplayer for the main characters Sebastian Michaelis and Ciel Phantomhive

main characters

Sebastian Michaelis ( セ バ ス チ ャ ン ・ ミ カ エ リ ス , Sebasuchan Mikaerisu )
Sebastian is the devil with whom 12-year-old aristocratic Ciel Phantomhive signed a contract to get revenge on all those who tarnished the Phantomhives name. Sebastian appears in the appearance of a tall, black-haired man with red eyes (shining in demonic status) and represents Ciels Butler. Both his true form and his real name are unknown, although he is one of the most powerful devils already to During the times of King Edward III the plague spread throughout Europe. Even if he always carries out his tasks conscientiously and perfectly, Sebastian shows that he regards the role of butler with a certain irony, and likes to drop sarcastic comments to his master that make Ciel run wild every now and then. He also tries to steer Ciel's actions in a certain direction in order to perfect the taste of his soul for him. Sebastian hates dogs and has a big weakness for cats of all kinds, but is not allowed to keep one, because Ciel is allergic to cats. It can happen that he ignores his master when he comes across a cat.
Ciel Phantomhive ( シ エ ル ・ フ ァ ン ト ム ハ イ ヴ , Shieru Fantomuhaivu , also called The Nefarious Noble or Queen's Watchdog )
Despite his tender age of just twelve years (turns 13 in the course of the story), Ciel is the head of the Phantomhive family and director of the successful company "Phantomhive Co.", which mainly deals with the toy industry, but later also with busy in gastronomy. While he was a carefree and happy boy in his childhood, despite his cat hair allergy and asthma attacks, this behavior changes completely after the murder of his parents who died in a fire in their own house and he becomes a bitter tactician of the desperately clings to his hatred in order to derive the necessary strength for his perpetrator search. He is also keen to win every 'game'. Here he regards all of his fellow human beings as merely chess pieces. Sebastian, for example, he only sees as a jumper who can move across the entire field. Plus, he's always ready to break the rules to win a game. Only in the presence of people like his fiancé “Lizzy”, who is also his cousin, does it become clear that he is not completely indifferent to them - despite his pride.

Phantomhive household

The Phantomhives domestic workers are all pretty clumsy and incompetent when it comes to their jobs as employees. It turns out, however, that they were hired for a completely different reason and serve more to protect the property with their very considerable skills and to guard the young man.

Bardroy
Also known as Bard, is the Phantomhive household's completely talentless cook. This may mainly be due to his very questionable preparation method, which is exhausted in flambéing, but since Sebastian usually fixes this again, Ciel and his guests always get an excellent menu. Bard was a former soldier and was hired as a cook by Sebastian after a lost battle. Bard had lost everyone and everything in this battle. It turns out he just can't imagine what it's like to cook slowly and live normally. It always seems like a dream to him, because everything had to happen quickly in war. Whether the food or vital decisions. He still has old contacts with gun builders and the like, so he is always equipped with the latest weapons and of course uses them in an emergency.
Finnian
Often called Finny, is the gardener of the Phantomhives. He was previously held captive and experimented a lot with him, which gives him extreme physical strength and uprooting a tree is the least amount of effort for him. He was finally freed by Sebastian and in gratitude that he was saved and now has the opportunity to always be outside, he protects the property.
Maylene
She is the clumsy house maid of the Phantomhives through her broken glasses. Maylene is extremely farsighted, which makes her an excellent shot and only needs her eyes to aim. Accordingly, she used to work as a killer until Sebastian came and offered her a job as a housemaid. She got glasses from Ciel with which she can see better again and for that she is very grateful to her master and has sworn to always protect him together with the property. She also has a big weakness for Sebastian, because she doesn't know about his true identity as a demon.
Tanaka
He is the butler of the former head of the Phantomhives. He is often portrayed as a little tea-drinking man, but is a great help on Ciel's missions because of his great knowledge of the Phantomhive family and as a master of the katana.
Snake
He was the contortionist at Noah's Ark Circus and tried to murder Ciel after all members of his troop were killed by Sebastian. However, Ciel took him on as a lackey in the household to offer him a new home since he had lost his own. Snake accompanies the Earl on his cruise on the Campania, among other things .
Pluto
Pluto only belongs to the Phantomhive household in the anime. The devil dog acts as a kind of pet there, since in addition to its human form it often appears in the form of a huge, white dog. He was accepted into the household when Ciel is hired by the Queen to turn a small village into a health resort, confronting multiple murders and meeting the housemaid Angela, who Finny has been passionate about from the start. It later emerges that at least one of the murders was committed by Pluto, who in his own way wanted to do Angela a favor because she found and raised him at an early age. She asks Sebastian, who trains Pluto during his stay in the village, to look after him instead of her. Ciel decides to grant her this wish, but mainly because Sebastian hates dogs and he sees them as an opportunity to annoy him a little.

Nobles

Angelina "Madame Red" Durless
Angelina Durless, called Madame Red because of her red hair and clothes, is the sister of Ciel's mother and therefore his aunt. She fell in love with Ciel's father Vincent, which caused a world to collapse for her when he and Ciel's mother announced their upcoming wedding. She eventually married Baron Barnett, who didn't seem to care that she still loved Vincent, and became pregnant by him. However, they suffered an accident in which the baron died and Angelina lost her child and uterus. Because of the resulting desperation, she killed the prostitutes who came to her in the hospital to have an abortion, where she finally met the Shinigami Grell Sutcliff, who helped her. In public and towards Ciel, however, she continues to be the loving aunt who cares for her nephew and is actually always in a good mood. However, she is ultimately murdered by Grell Sutcliff because she did not have the heart to kill Ciel.
Elizabeth Ethel Cordelia Midford
She is the daughter of Marquise Frances Midford and both cousin and fiancée of Ciel Phantomhive. Elizabeth, often called "Lizzy", loves sweet things and cute things. Since Ciel hardly shows any emotions, she always wants to cheer him up to make him laugh. Although she often overdoes it, which makes Ciel angry, she doesn't give up trying to get him back to laughing. It later turns out that she knows many of Ciel's secrets and is a very good fencer.
Prince Soma Asman Kadar
He is 17 and the 26th Prince of Bengal. Prince Soma has come to England to find and bring back his servant Meena. Little did he know that Meena had left voluntarily with a nobleman, Lord Harold West, to get rich. In the beginning he always blamed others for mistakes, but over time in London he learned to look at things from different perspectives and realized that it wasn't right to hold others responsible for his mistakes. He stays in London, in Ciel's town villa, to learn how to become a seasoned man.
Agni
He is the servant of Prince Soma, who is like a god to him. He used to be a nobleman in India by the name of Arshad, as he belonged to the top class of priests. But he abused his position and even began to blaspheme the gods. He was supposed to be hanged for that, but at that moment Prince Soma came and wanted him to be his servant. He cut off his hair and named him Agni. From then on, Agni worships the gods. He also has the right hand of God, with which he is the best fighter in Prince Soma's palace, and can cook curry like a god.

Shinigami

Grell Sutcliff
Grell is a Shinigami who initially appears in the role of Madame Red's somewhat clumsy butler until he reveals himself in the fight against Sebastian and shows his true form. His favorite color is red and accordingly Grell has very long red hair, wears red glasses and later Madame Reds' former coat. He is bisexual and calls himself a "lady", he is also in love with Sebastian. His character can completely overturn within seconds, just because of a wrong word, from hot-headed, passionate and a bizarre romance to strong bloodthirstiness and pronounced sadism. His Death Scythe is a chainsaw that was specially made for him. However, this is confiscated as this is against the rules. However, this is returned to him in a later fight, by William.
William T. Spears
William is one of the higher ranking Shinigamis. He has a great aversion to demons, which he doesn't try to cover up as soon as he meets Sebastian. He always adheres strictly to the rules and is always annoyed by people like Grell who violate them. Otherwise he is shown rather emotionless and cool. His Death Scythe is a telescopic hedge trimmer that he uses for almost everything, including adjusting his glasses.
Undertaker
He runs a London funeral home, which Ciel visited on a case to obtain information from him about the murdered prostitutes. As payment, however, he does not ask for the queen's pennies, but rather that you make him laugh. Undertaker sleeps in a coffin and can never be found without an urn of biscuits in the shape of a bone. His appearance is in keeping with his somewhat mysterious demeanor. He has long gray hair that covers his eyes with lush bangs. He also wears a long, loose black coat, with his hands often covered. But if they do come out, you can see the long black fingernails. He also wears a kind of gray scarf that starts on his left shoulder, runs over it and is tied under his right arm. Furthermore, he always wears a black hat and high-heeled shoes. Undertaker despises the queen. In the later chapters, you will learn that Undertaker is a retired but very powerful Shinigami. His Death Scythe is a huge scythe with a skeleton built into its handle. At the beginning still a character that you could not classify well, he turns out to be a very serious enemy.
Ronald Knox
He is one of the youngest Shinigami and his Death Scythe is a lawnmower that he got approved by a friend in the administration. He shows his superiors, like William and Grell, always respectful, which does not necessarily lead to sympathy, because he is very bright and in the eyes of Williams annoying. He also seems to have an aversion to demons, but this is not as pronounced as William's.

Trancy household

The Trancy family only appears in the series Kuroshitsuji II, which is why all characters are only represented in the anime and do not play any role in the manga.

Claude Faustus
Claude is in a certain way the second Sebastian, because he also takes on the role of a butler as a demon in order to preserve the soul of his master after the contract has been fulfilled. However, his character is the complete opposite of Sebastian. He seldom grimaces and is always serious, while Sebastian often lets himself be carried away to jokes, not least at the expense of his master. Despite the contract, Claude now and then shows doubts about his loyalty to Alois and doesn't seem to take the task of protecting even half as seriously as Sebastian. He seems to see the whole thing that way, as long as the soul of his master lives, the contract is in place. This is also shown by the fact that he tries to mix Ciel's and Alois' souls, as he strongly prefers Ciel's soul to that of Alois.
Alois Trancy
Alois is the head of the Trancy family, although it is not known what duties this noble family fulfills, except that they seem to have a similar bond with the Queen as the Phantomhives. Alois is also not the real son of this family, because his real name is Jim McCain, but he dropped this name after the death of his brother Luka and with the help of Claude got access to the Trancy family. He has a strongly bipolar personality, which always alternates between a happy and bright boy and a bad-tempered and sometimes already depressed and anxious person. Among other things, he seems to have a particular interest in Ciel and to pursue him. This probably testifies to his past, in which he was severely abused. In addition, he wants nothing more than to experience love from Claude and to be genuinely protected, whereby Claude sees this as a purely platonic relationship, which sometimes drives Alois almost insane. Until he later realizes who really loves him, he hopes that Claude will reciprocate his feelings one day. In addition, Alois is quite insidious and sadistic, which he usually takes out on his maid Hannah. He probably regrets this behavior later, however, as he finds out that she has entered into a contract with Luka and that her soul is slumbering inside her, waiting to meet Alois again.
Hannah Anafeloz
Hannah is the maid of the Trancy household and also a demon who even houses the demon sword Laevateinn. She is very loyal to Alois Trancy, but is abused physically and mentally by him. But she seems to be tacitly accepting what was by no means unusual at the time. However, towards the end of the anime, we learn that she had a contract with Alois Trancy's "brother" Luka a long time ago, as he wanted Alois to fulfill his dream of the mass deaths of the villagers around her. Hannah explains that she loves Luka and therefore also Alois, which could be one of the reasons that she endured Alois' abuse towards her without making use of her powers. She finally enters into another contract with Alois after he realizes that Hannah and Luka, whose soul lives in her, are the only ones from whom he can expect love.
Thompson, Timber and Canterbury
Thompson, Timber, and Canterbury, who are both demons and triplets, also serve in the Trancy household. Most of the time they only talk to each other, but this is inaudible.

Others

Lukewarm
Lau is a Chinese opium dealer who is currently in London and is being covered by Ciel so that he can conduct and expand his business. In return, Ciel receives certain goods or information from him. He often appears as a somewhat absent-minded and forgetful Chinese, although he rarely opens his eyes, but is actually a person to be taken seriously, whereby he also acts as a killer.
Ran-Mao
She never leaves Lau's side and speaks only very monosyllabic, if at all. It is noticeable that she always wears very short Chinese clothes that emphasize her curves. She is the younger but not blood related sister of Lau. She is a fighter, but only acts on Lau's orders.
Viscount von Druitt (Aleister Chamber)
At the beginning, he is suspected of being "Jack the Ripper", which is why Ciel and Sebastian are investigating him. It turns out, however, that this is involved in comparatively harmless organ trafficking. He is then arrested. He repeatedly enjoys short guest appearances in the manga and anime, but more often in the series.
Queen Victoria
The Queen is arguably the person with the biggest differences between anime and manga. While she has played a minor role in the manga so far and is a very bright person who mourns her deceased husband a lot, but is otherwise very polite and concerned about her citizens, she plays a much larger role in the anime. Here she is very closed and only speaks through her butler Ash. In addition, she is always veiled in the anime, so you never really get to see her until the end.
Ash / Angela
Ash is the queen's private butler in the anime and is always dressed in white. His personality is a big secret for the time being, but from the start he is very similar to the young woman Angela. The explanation: Ash is an angel with two sexes, making Angela and Ash one person. Although he is extremely fixated on purity and strongly rejects everything else, he is willing to make common cause with Sebastian.
