Kyoto price

The Kyoto Prize ( Japanese 京都 賞 , Kyōto-shō ) is an annual award for outstanding achievements in science and art . The highly endowed prize has been awarded since 1985. In addition to the Nobel Prize , it is one of the highest awards for services to science and culture.

There are three price categories, with the focus in the corresponding category rotating between the various disciplines. The Kyoto Prize is considered to be the most important award, especially in those disciplines in which no Nobel Prize is awarded.

The nomination takes place in June, the award ceremony in November. The Tennō and his family take part in the celebration.

The prize money is 50 million yen (approx. 364,000 euros) per category. The award honors the award winner's entire life's work. It is donated by the Kyocera company and its founder Kazuo Inamori . The Kyocera company is based in the Japanese city ​​of Kyoto ; hence the name of the award. Here the prize is awarded annually on November 10th.
