history

Lappan Verlag is founded on September 3, 1983 as a GmbH in Oldenburg by six shareholders. Co-founder is Dieter Schwalm together with four other shareholders from Stalling Verlag (Oldenburg), which went bankrupt in the same year . A small part of the stalling program can be taken over, including the comic longseller " Nick Knatterton " and the classic picture book " Der kleine Häwelmann " in the original edition with pictures by Else Wenz-Vietor .

In 1984 Lappan Verlag published the first spring program, including “Ach du dicker Hund!”, The first book by Uli Stein . Other authors from the very beginning include a. Eva Heller , Volker Ernsting and Erich Rauschenbach . With more than 12 million copies sold, Uli Stein is still the most successful author at Lappan Verlag.

In addition to the publication of the first cartoon gift volumes by Peter Butschkow , cooperation with the cartoon factory Köpenick Berlin began in 1992, with which exhibition catalogs were published together. In 1994 the picture book series " Nulli und Priesemut " by Matthias Sodtke and the publisher's most successful picture book, "The true story of all colors" by Eva Heller, appear . Two years later, Lappan Verlag divides its biannual program previews thematically into "picture books" and "cartoons and gift books".

In 1996 Lappan expanded its program to include text volumes. In addition, Jutta Bauer's gift book "Selma" is developing into a bestseller with over 400,000 copies sold today in many different editions, and with over 20 licensed editions, it is the publisher's top export. In 1998 the cooperation with the star begins . Books and calendars by Haderer , Tetsche and Til Mette are published. Also in 1998 Lappan took over the Fackelträger-Verlag (Hanover) with authors such as Heinz Erhardt , Wolf-Rüdiger Marunde and Steffen Butz . In 2002 the name "Fackelträger" and the remaining stocks are sold to Komet Verlag (Cologne). The exceptions are the books by Heinz Erhardt, which remain with Lappan Verlag.

In 2003 the publishing house celebrates its 20th anniversary with 19 employees, 435 available titles and around 70 novelties per year. This year Lappan Verlag takes a stake in the 2003 newly founded Achterbahn Verlag GmbH based in Kiel. Three years later, Achterbahn was completely taken over by Lappan and the GmbH was merged with Lappan GmbH.

In 2007 the shareholders of Lappan GmbH sell their shares to the Carl Ueberreuter GmbH publishing house in Vienna. Lappan thus becomes part of the Ueberreuter publishing group, which belongs to Salzer Holding GmbH.

In 2009 the publisher started a series of cartoon samplers with "Fiese Bilder", which were created in cooperation with the cartoon factory Köpenick on the occasion of the "Cartoonair am Meer", an open-air cartoon exhibition directed by Wolfgang Kleinert in the seaside resort of Prerow.

In 2013 the publishers Ueberreuter and Annette Betz are sold by Salzer Holding GmbH. The Ueberreuter publishing group is dissolved. Lappan Verlag remains the only publisher owned by Salzer Holding GmbH in Vienna. A temporary solution, as will become apparent just a year later. Dieter Schwalm takes over the management of Lappan Verlag again in January 2014.

At the beginning of May 2015, Carlsen Verlag , Hamburg, will take over Lappan Verlag from Salzer Holding GmbH with retroactive effect from January 1, 2015. The publishing location remains in Oldenburg . The management consists of Carlsen managing directors Joachim Kaufmann and Dieter Schwalm, who will continue to be responsible for the program. The books by Carlsen cartoonists Ralph Ruthe and Joscha Sauer , as well as other Carlsen humor titles, will appear under the Lappan label from spring 2016.

On July 15, 2018, Klaus-Thorsten Firnig, who previously managed the Egmont publishing companies as managing director, will become the publishing director of Lappan Verlag. Nicola Heinrichs is responsible for program management, while Antje Haubner is the deputy program director. Dieter Schwalm is retiring on November 30, 2019.
