action

Lemony Snicket is the narrator of the frame narration and does not appear in the internal plot . The real story is about the Baudelaire children.

After the tragic death of their parents in a fire that destroyed their house, the three Baudelaire children Violet, Klaus and Sunny inherit a very large fortune, which can only be given to them when they reach the age of majority. Until then, a relative should act as a guardian . First choice is Count Olaf, an eccentric actor who quickly turns out to be a greedy villain who is only after the great fortune of children.

After Count Olaf locked the three orphans in his car and "parked" it on a railroad track in order to have them run over by a train, his custody was withdrawn. The children now come to the herpetologist Dr. Montgomery, with whom they immediately get along well. Montgomery intends to emigrate with them to Peru. Shortly after their arrival, Count Olaf also appears, disguised as the Italian research assistant Stephano. The following night, Olaf kills the children's new guardian. The next morning, Olaf tries to make the murder look like an accident so that he can regain custody of the children. This is thwarted by Sunny.

The next guardian is her aunt Josephine. The once fun and adventurous woman has become very anxious since her husband Ike died. Your only consolation in life is grammar. She lives by a lake where her husband was eaten by the suckers who suckled the Lake of Sighs. This time Count Olaf appears in the disguise of a sailor by the name of Talmi. The children recognize him, but he manages to win the aunt's trust. He forces Josephine over the phone to write a suicide note and transfer custody of the children to him. When the children return, it looks as if the aunt has thrown herself out of the window. In her suicide note, however, the aunt hid a secret message by means of spelling and grammar errors. She hides from Olaf in a cave on the other side of the lake. The children get to her by boat. When they have Aunt Josephine on board, they are attacked by the Sea of Sighs leeches at sea. Count Olaf rushes to the rescue. He leaves Aunt Josephine to the leeches and takes the children with him.

After all, he wants to get hold of the fortune through a child marriage with Violet. But it is a forced marriage , as he threatens to kill the prisoner Sunny if Violet does not marry him. The wedding is staged in a play in which the judge is played by a real judge. But Klaus manages to destroy the wedding certificate with a burning glass and convict Count Olaf. He can also expose Olaf as the one who started the fire in the Baudelaires' house.

Instead of being arrested and locked up, Count Olaf manages to flee. In the end, the children are on their way to the next unknown guardian again. Before that, however, they receive a stray letter from their parents in which they explain to the siblings that they will never be lost as long as they have each other.

“'Lemony Snicket - Puzzling Events' is not a compelling, but a conceivable alternative for cinema fans for whom ' Harry Potter ' is too smooth and well-behaved. Brad Silberling came up with a bizarre, bizarre and coolly witty fairy tale that appeals to all age groups, but can only be understood by adults in all its diversity of details. "

- Carsten Baumgart on filmstarts.de

“Fantastic film full of magical and bizarre worlds and backdrops, which translates the literary stories ... into episodes that are as adventurous and eerie as they are profound and pointedly nasty. A pleasure for fantasy lovers, a test of courage for younger children. "

The Wiesbaden film evaluation agency awarded the production the rating of particularly valuable .
