The area of the area changes recorded in the lists always corresponds to the respective extent of Saxony at the time of the area change.

description
In the Free State of Saxony, the number of municipalities decreased from 1626 on December 31, 1990 to 438 on December 31, 2013. This is a decrease of 73% compared to 1990. In 1994 and 1999 in particular, there was a sharp decrease of the community through the unification and integration of communities with a low population. From December 31, 1993 to December 31, 1994, the number of municipalities in Saxony fell by 594, which is the greatest decrease to date. Between December 31, 1998 and December 31, 1999, another 234 municipalities were dissolved. The district of Plauen was able to gain additional communities in 1992: the change of state from nine Thuringian communities to Saxony increased the number of communities in the district from 40 on December 31, 1991 to 49 on December 31, 1992.
At the district level , Saxony experienced two district area reforms. After the GDR joined the Federal Republic and Saxony was re-established, the old GDR districts were largely taken over. As in all other new federal states, they were combined into larger units in the first half of the 1990s. In Saxony, this happened in the district reform 1994/1996 , which came into force on August 1, 1994 and was completed by March 23, 1996. The 48 districts were thus replaced by 22 larger ones, and the city of Hoyerswerda became a district-free.
After a second district reform was carried out in Saxony-Anhalt in 2007, another district reform took effect in Saxony on August 1, 2008. In the administrative and functional reform of 2008 , the 22 districts were combined into ten new ones, into which the independent cities (with the exception of Chemnitz , Dresden and Leipzig ) were incorporated.
The 2008 district reform also had an impact on the government districts formed in 1990 ; they were renamed as directorate districts . The government and directorate districts roughly corresponded to the districts of the GDR . On March 1, 2012, they were combined to form a regional directorate for Saxony .
Demarcation
This list only takes into account changes to administrative regional units, i.e. changes to districts and municipalities. These include the incorporation of municipalities into another, mergers of two municipalities, the formation of new municipalities, partial reclassifications and outsourcing as well as reclassifications and name changes of municipalities.
In incorporations of one or more communities in another of the name of the host community and their remains community identification number received. The name and the regional code of the incorporated municipality will be deleted; its districts will usually become districts of the receiving municipality.
In the case of mergers , two municipalities merge equally to form a new municipality. This can either take over the name and the parish key of one of the original parishes or be given a new name with a new parish key. The second case is a new formation of the church.
Teilumgliederungen, partial divestitures and reclassifications are not on this list to reclassifications summarized. In the case of partial reclassifications, parts of a municipality that is in the process of being dissolved are incorporated into one or more other municipalities. Partial spin-offs take place when parts of a church are outsourced, which then either form a new church or are incorporated into another church. A reclassification changes the affiliation of an administrative regional unit to the higher-level regional unit, for example if a municipality moves to another district.
Name changes only affect the municipality name . The community key remains.
