Clay pit in Gaustadt 461A001 Bamberg
position
Sandstone Keuper Region Of the formerly numerous clay pits in this area, only two remain today. The sequence of layers has been examined several times since the 1950s. All authors describe a complicated sequence of loosening, floating earth and soil formation. Parts of the profile are not yet dated. It is proven that worm and crack ice age and interglacial formations occur. Ice wedges and floating earth are evidence of the cold periods, while soil formations go back to warm periods. 500

Northern Albrand region From the 11th century, the castle sandstone was mined for the extraction of cleaning and scouring sand. The approximately 11 km long tunnel system has been used as a storage and cooling room (e.g. for the numerous Bamberg breweries) since the 17th century. Between 1941 and 1945, the facilities, with a maximum depth of 70 meters, also served as an air raid shelter for the Bamberg population.
