Deanery Silz

The deanery comprises 19 parishes, three branches and three chaplains.

history

The first pastor of Silz was a Magister Peter, who was named as a witness in an episcopal legal act in Brixen in 1233. In addition to the original parish of Silz, his pastoral care district also included the subsidiary churches Haiming, Ötz, Sautens, Umhausen, Längenfeld, Sölden, and - until the founding of the Stams monastery - the chapel of St. John the Baptist in Stams. This hierarchical order was suddenly turned upside down when Bishop Bruno von Brixen, with the consent of his chapter, separated the Johanneskapelle from the parish of Silz in 1272 and made it subordinate to the newly founded Stams monastery. As patron saints , the prelates of Stams were entitled to supervise the administration of church property and compliance with church regulations, to issue dispensations and to regulate other parish affairs in the above-mentioned church districts. Since the monastery superiors interpreted these rights very broadly and claimed freedoms in their territory that otherwise only a bishop is entitled to, serious disagreements repeatedly occurred with the pastor of Silz. Since the parish administrator of Silz was only appointed by the monastery as “vicarius ad nutum amovibilis” (available at any time), he had to expect his dismissal overnight if his administration did not correspond to the abbot's ideas. The vicars in Silz tried to shake off this dependence by turning to the consistory in Brixen for help after a disciplinary measure by the abbot . Since this ecclesiastical authority was interested in suppressing the monastic freedoms in the diocese and expanding its own position of power, its complaints were often crowned with success. The exemption dispute that developed between the Stams monastery and the Bishop of Brixen was only resolved under Abbot Georg Nussbaumer III. decided by Stams. On this occasion, the parish relations between the monastery and the parish of Silz were placed on a new basis. A relic from the founding time of the monastery is the right of the prelates of Stams to propose a suitable candidate to the bishop when appointing a new pastor in Silz ( right of presentation ).

In 1858 a separate dean's office was established in Silz, separated from the dean's office Flaurling , to which 22 pastoral care stations belonged at the time. The seat of the deanery was the parish of Silz from 1858 to 2014.
