List of breeds of pigs

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of domestic pig breeds ordered by origin .

The domestication of wild boars began around 9000 years ago. However, up to modern times, the " domestic pigs " crossed with wild boars again and again, so that no pig breeds in today's sense could develop. The "domestic pigs" of the Middle Ages and antiquity looked more like wild boars than any of our pig breeds today. Most of today's pig breeds are younger than 200 to 300 years, many even younger than 100 years. In the pig production today are mainly hybrid pigs used. The term hybrid breeding describes the procedure in pig breeding rather vaguely. In the narrower sense, this describes a multi-racial cross .
