List of mines in the Vogelsberg

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

In Vogelsberg is mining documented for a few hundred years, as in 1489 forging at low-Ohmen . However, this only had regional significance. Initially iron and later, to a lesser extent, other mineral resources such as B. Bauxite mined. Found remains of slag testify to the smelting of the ore obtained by means of racing furnaces in ancient, undocumented times. Vogelsberg iron ores are usually surrounded by iron-containing clays and were extracted in open-cast mining or consisted of so-called lump ore, which was mined in tunnels . The ore mining ended in the 1960s. About 40 iron stone pits are known in the area of the Vogelsberg. As a rule, these belonged to the mountain area of Upper Hesse .

genesis

The Vogelsberg is an extinct volcano and therefore rich in basalt soils . Due to the deep weathering of the ferrous basalt in geological depressions, brown ironstone was able to separate out and accumulate in the form of cords and nests. Loamy layers often lie over a clay-like decomposition mass.

Lignite mining

At Nieder-Ohmen there are deposits of lignite in addition to ferrous deposits in the earth's strata. On the border of the Vogelsberg towards the Wetterau there are several flooded opencast mining lakes of the former Friedrich lignite mine . Flooded lignite opencast mines further to the west are already in the Wetterau (e.g. the Wölfersheimer See near Wölfersheim ).
