Overview: Mining in the Odenwald
Explanations: Red points: Mines; blue: hammer mills; green: melting; orange line: boundary line between basement and overburden

In Odenwald is mining documented since 795, but was too Roman and Celtic times and had mostly only regional importance. Initially, iron , silver and copper were mined. In the 19th century, manganese and barite then dominated, and zinc deposits were finally exploited. A regional specialty was the underground gypsum mining near Obrigheim along the Neckar slopes .

The history and development of mining activities in the region are described in detail in the article Mining and metallurgy in the Odenwald .

There are primarily the following mining areas in the Odenwald:

On March 21, 1921, the dismantling began again, but this work only lasted until 1928. The dismantling was not revived after 1945.

  14. The silver content was low; a maximum of 2.5 kg of silver could be extracted from 5 to 10 tons of ore. Between 24 and 33 people were employed. The pit was ventilated without having to dig an additional weather shaft, as the two tunnels were driven with different inclines after they branched off, so that a permanent draft is created by slight temperature differences. 19. From 1851 a smelter was built, which also processed the copper ores from Roßdorf. The low copper content of the ores brought the extraction to the brink of profitability, so the extraction rights were sold to C. Rhodius from Cologne in 1854, who immediately sold on to Ch. Rochaz from Paris, who in turn leased to H. Simpson from New York. Simpson went bankrupt in 1855. After a few years of standstill, production was resumed from 1860 by a trade union from Reichenbach, initially with 17 miners and from 1864 with 45 employees. From 1861, a leaching plant replaced the hut, but the resulting wastewater led to the mine being shut down again in 1868. After more than 30 years of interruption, the deposit was opened up again by L. Best from 1902, and further attempts were made in 1914 and 1917, all of which did not result in continuous operation. It was not until 1939 that it was successfully put back into operation, which lasted until 1944, and the mine has been closed for good since June 30, 1944. Production 1939–1944: 13025 t of conveyed goods, corresponding to 171 t of copper, as the copper content is very low.
