List of meter measures
The designation of meter measures can consist of the name of a foot of the verse and a length designation (e.g. “ iambic trimeter ”). These meter measures are described in detail in the articles for the respective meter foot. There are also names for special meter measures, such as " Alexandriner ", which is an iambic six-lever but also has other features.
Designations of the length of the verse
There is a distinction between the names of lengths (with corresponding names) according to the number of meters , the number of feet , the number of syllables and the number of accents .
When differentiating according to the number of meters contained, there are:
- Monometer (1 meter)
- Dimeter (2 meters)
- Trimeter (3 meters)
- Tetrameter (4 meters)
- Pentameters (5 meters)
- Hexameter (6 meters)
Since a meter can contain one or two feet, depending on the foot, the number of meters does not always correspond to the number of feet. An iambic trimeter consists of six iambi , since the iambic meter has two feet. In the Anglo-Saxon region in particular, there is often no distinction between the metron and the foot of verse, ie in an English text, “iambic pentameter” will often mean an iambic five-key.
If verses are differentiated according to the number of feet they contain, there are separate names for them, especially in Greek metrics:
- Monopody (1 foot)
- Dipody (2 feet)
- Tripod (3 feet)
- Tetrapody (4 feet)
- Pentapody (5 feet)
- Hexapody (6 feet)
- Heptapody (7 feet)
- Octapody (8 feet)
The terms that end in "-podie" and are derived from the Greek correspond to the following terms in the Latin metric:
- Binar (2 feet)
- Ternar (3 feet)
- Quaternar (4 feet)
- Senar (6 feet)
- Septenar (7 feet)
- Octagonal (8 feet)
If a distinction is made according to the number of uplifts, the following terms are common:
Analogously one speaks of three-stroke, four-stroke, etc.
If a distinction is made according to the number of syllables, there are also some special names, namely:
- Monosyllabus (1 syllable)
- Disyllabus (2 syllables)
- Trisyllabus (3 syllables)
- Tetrasyllabus (4 syllables)
- Pentasyllabus (5 syllables)
- Hexasyllabus (6 syllables)
- Heptasyllabus (7 syllables)
- Octosyllabus (8 syllables)
- Enneasyllabus (9 syllables)
- Decasylabus (10 syllables)
- Hendekasyllabus (11 syllables)
- Dodecasyllabus (12 syllables)
The corresponding German names are Dreisilbler , Viersilbler etc. In French metrics, apart from the 12-syllable verse, which there is called vers alexandrin ( Alexandriner ), are commonly referred to as vers de trois syllabes , vers de quatre syllabes etc.
Finally, in French and Italian poetry, a distinction is also made between verses with even and odd numbers of syllables:
- Even number of syllables: fr. vers pair ; it. verso parisillabo
- Odd number of syllables: fr. vers impair ; it. verso imparisillabo
Special meter measures
The following table only records those meter measures whose names are not simply composed of the designation of the foot of the verse and the length of the verse. To represent the verse scheme in metric notation , the traditional notation with - for quantity or elevation and ◡ for abbreviation or lowering is used throughout , except for syllable-counting verse forms .
Forms are not listed here which, due to their structure (e.g. their rhyme connection), are to be seen more as stanzas than as meters, including in particular the long lines of Germanic poetry. For these see the list of stanzas and poem forms .

Meter measures of accented languages
The table below, which can be sorted, shows all combinations for verses with up to 12 syllables or terms with the restriction that, similar to German, at least one and at most two subscripts always appear between two accents. The first and second columns show the number of syllables or terms and the number of accents. The third column shows the cadence , abbreviated as:
- m: male, lifting at the dispatcher
- w: female, a lowering on the dispatch
- k: sounding, two indentations on the dispatch
The fourth column contains the scheme in the usual notation, the fifth the verse feet, abbreviated as:
A trailing apostrophe indicates that the last syllable has been left out, i.e. catalexes . The sixth column gives the rhythm, whereby a distinction is only made between purely iambic, purely trochaic and in all other cases according to whether the verse begins with an accentuation (dactylic) or not (anapaestic).
