architecture
In the main square of the town, Largo 1 de Dezembro, there is the Holy Spirit Chapel Império do Espírito Santo da Luz , on the facade of which the year 1928 presumably indicates the year of construction. The town's three-aisled main church, the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Luz with an almost square floor plan, was completed not far from here in 1738 after the previous building was destroyed in an earthquake in 1730. After the earthquake of January 1st, 1980 it was one of the most badly destroyed churches on the island.
In 2015, in the district of Canada Longa, near the colorful Holy Spirit Chapel Imperio do Espiritu Santo de Pedras Brancas , on whose gable June 13, 1998 is indicated as the day of inauguration, the museum Museu da Vida was opened in a farmhouse made of black lava stone Rural furnished by Ilha Graciosa . Among other things, a traditional style maize store, called burra de milho on the island , was rebuilt here.
In Carapacho, a street village , a monument erected in 1996 commemorates Vasco Gil Sodré, who is said to have discovered the island in the 15th century from the neighboring island of Terceira and who is considered to be its first inhabitant. A rectangular pavilion built in 1996 adjoins the green area. Carapacho, which is probably the oldest village on the entire island, is also known for its thermal springs and its bathhouse, built by the sea in the classicist style in 1860 and restored in 2010. Farol do Carapacho lighthouse, commissioned in 1956, stands high above the town .
The small chapel of Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Lurdes in Carapacho was inaugurated in 1896 after almost a year of construction. Its floor plan is 10 m long and 6.1 m wide. The name of the chapel refers to the French pilgrimage site of Lourdes . The chapel was destroyed in the earthquake of January 1, 1980 and was the most hard-hit church on the island, but it was soon rebuilt.
Thermal springs
The hot springs, which arise on the edge of the district of Carapacho below sea level, have been used for the treatment of rheumatic diseases and skin diseases since 1750 . Their water has a pH of 7.2 and a temperature of 35 to 40 degrees and is particularly rich in sulfur and magnesium , but also contains chlorine and sodium bicarbonate . The Spa is located on the southern slope of the volcano crater Caldeira, who because of the cave Furna do Enxofre with her hot mud pools and the lake Lagoa do Styx is known.
