The Marbach is a 13 km long stream in central Baden-Württemberg in the Ostalbkreis and then mainly in the district of Göppingen , which flows into the Fils from the right after a course alternating between west-southwest and south in the district of Faurndau of the district town of Göppingen .

geography

course

The Marbach rises in the western Ostalbkreis on the left edge of the Remstal at about 433  m above sea level. NN at Hetzenhof in the small town of Lorch next to the B 297 in the area of a golf course and initially moves west-southwest. After a good half a kilometer it enters the valley forest and after just under two kilometers it is only 385.6  m above sea level. NN its first significant inflow on the municipality and district border to Wäschenbeuren in the district of Göppingen . In a completely unpopulated basin, which is more than a kilometer wide, after about four and a half kilometers, the municipality markings from Börtlingen to the right bank, after which the brook runs ever more southerly and finally flows through the Börtlingen area.

About six kilometers after the source, it changes to the open corridor and immediately crosses the hamlet of Zell . Below the village flows from the village of Birenbach , which is only a little to the east in its Untertal, with the Krettenbach, the first, somewhat more respectable tributary, a good four kilometers in length, accompanied by the B 297. This runs from here in the Marbachtal, which is now on a south-west course moves between forest slopes in the municipality of Rechberghausen , but soon turns south again. The Herrenbach , coming from the northwest, flows at the settlement boundary of the village of Rechberghausen.Together with its longer upper course with a total length of around 9.5 km, it even exceeds the Marbach upper course, which is one kilometer shorter here and, according to area, a part of the Schurwald almost equal to its catchment area drains. It arises in the Herrenbachstausee from its two upper reaches.

From Rechberghausen, the valley of the Marbach, which is now around four and a half kilometers long, is almost forest-free and heavily populated. Immediately below the settlement boundary of the village, it crosses over to the district town of Göppingen , the main road leaves the valley and the 6.5 km long Meerbach , which arises at the southern foot of the Hohenstaufen ( 684.1  m above sea level ) runs from the east-northeast . To the south-west it now flows two and a half kilometers, runs through the district of Faurndau and flows into it at about 303  m above sea level. NN from the right into the lower Fils .

The Marbach is 13.2 km long and has a mean bottom slope of 10 ‰ with a total gradient of around 130 meters .

Catchment area

The Marbach has a catchment area of 58.6 km², which is roughly rectangular in shape. In the north it extends all the way to the left upper slope edge of the westward running Rems valley , which flows only 1.5–3 km away, from the Schorndorf district of Oberberken at the northwest tip to the Lorch hamlet of Oberkirneck at the northeast corner. The watershed that continues from there south-southeast to Hohenstaufen then separates Beutenbach from the catchment area of the left Rems tributary . In the Hohenstaufen area, it bends in front of the Krumm to the west-south-west and then runs before shorter right tributaries of the Fils to the west-south-west over the ridge of Hörnle and Spitalwald , through the Oberwald and northern Göppingen to the confluence in Faurndau. From there, the fourth side of the catchment area essentially moves northwest back to Oberberken, initially in front of the Blaubach that flows into the Fils below in Uhingen , then in front of the Nassach brook system , which the Fils flows further down between Uhingen and Ebersbach .

The right tributary Herrenbach, which flows into the Marbach at the middle course, with its catchment area of almost the same size as the Marbach upper course, as well as the long Meerbach flowing into the lower course from the left, expand the catchment area contour of the Marbach so much that it extends the longest across, namely over 13 km from Hohenstaufen ( 684.1  m above sea level ) in the source area of the Meerbach to its north-western tip in the source area of the Herrenbach upper course Schliffbach (up to 513.2  m above sea level ). The other highest elevations in the catchment area are in the vicinity of Hohenstaufen ( 548.4  m above sea level west on the heath , 537.2  m above sea level south-west on the Hörnle ), whose watershed is mostly between 400 and 500  m above sea level. NN lies. From the north-east corner via the Marbach spring to the mouth it is only about 10 km as the crow flies.

In terms of nature, the catchment area is divided into three sub-areas of main unit group No. 10, Swabian Keuper-Lias-Land . The east with the uppermost course of the Marbach, almost the entire Krettenbachtal and the Meerbach up to about half of its flow stretch belongs to the main unit No. 102 foreland of the eastern Swabian Alb , the larger northwest part with the Marbach middle course and the stream system of the Herrenbach lies in the eastern Schurwald , which is part of the main unit No. 107 Schurwald and Welzheimer Wald , the smaller southwest around Rechberghausen and the confluence with the foothills of the central Swabian Alb , main unit No. 101. In the Schurwald and on both sides of the upper Meerbach valley, the forest portion dominates, otherwise the corridor , especially in urban areas near the estuary.

Areas of nine cities and municipalities are in the catchment area, clockwise they are:

  • a corner of the town of Schorndorf in the northwest ( Rems-Murr-Kreis )
  • almost the entire municipality of Adelberg in the northwest (district of Göppingen)
  • almost the entire community of Börtlingen in the north (district of Göppingen)
  • a corner of the city of Lorch in the northeast (Ostalbkreis)
  • the greater part of the municipality of Wäschenbeuren in the north east (district of Göppingen)
  • a long strip of the district town of Göppingen from east to south (district of Göppingen)

geology

In the Marbach catchment area, the highest geological layer is usually the Lower Jurassic . The large upper reaches of the brook system above Rechberghausen - the Marbach itself, the Herrenbach with Schliffbach, the Kohlbach - have completely removed this layer in their wide valleys, so that at their incisions the Ober- and Mittelkeuper down to the Kieselsandstein ( Hassberge formation ) strokes. On the outer watershed and on the mountain ridges separating these valleys, however, there is still the Black Jura, often covered by large islands of loess sediment . In the southern part, on the other hand, the Lower Jurassic is also preserved throughout the valleys.

In the immediate vicinity of the Hohenstaufen, a witness mountain of the Swabian Alb , the sequence of layers continues upwards in the Central Jurassic via the Opalinus Clay Formation and the Iron Sandstone Formation as well as a steep ring from the Wedelsandstone to the Ornatenton Formation , the hilltop extends above it to the well-stratified limestone formation of the Upper Jurassic .

The Marbach from around the Krettenbach inflow, the Herrenbach from around the Kohlbach inflow and the Meerbach before the village of Lerchenberg run in floodplain sediment bands.

In continuation of its west-south-westerly direction at the foot of the Ostalb, the elongated fault structure of the Swabian Lineament on Hohenstaufen enters the catchment area. It splits up there; one fault continues in the old direction towards Uhingen an der Fils, another branches off west-northwest in the direction of Oberberken and initially offsets Keuper in the north against the Lower Jurassic in the south. Both faults run here clearly in front of the Alb eaves, which near Göppingen has already receded far to the south due to the erosion of the Fils and their tributaries.
