The Catholic parish church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Lechbruck am See , a municipality in the Ostallgäu district in the Bavarian administrative district of Swabia , was built at the end of the 18th century in the classicism style. The elevated church on a hill can be seen from afar. The interior surprises with its uniform early classicist furnishings.

history

A first church was probably built in Lechbruck in 1616. It stood in the southern part of the cemetery and was initially looked after by pastors from Bernbeuren . Lechbruck was raised to an independent parish in 1779. The miraculous image of Our Lady on the Lech was kept in the church, which was the goal of a pilgrimage . In 1785 this church was badly damaged by a lightning strike and had to be demolished. Just a year later, a little further north, on the Büchel , under the direction of the Pfronten master builder Johann Anton Geisenhof , construction of the new church began. In 1790 Auxiliary Bishop Johann Nepomuk August Freiherr von Ungelter was able to consecrate the new church on behalf of the Augsburg Prince-Bishop Clemens Wenzeslaus von Sachsen , whose coat of arms is attached to the choir arch . The tower was only completed two years later by Matthias and Franz Ott. In the course of the Enlightenment , the pilgrimage to Our Lady on the Lech came to a standstill. In the years 1985 to 1990 the church was renovated and its original furnishings and colors were largely restored.

Exterior construction

In the northern corner of the choir is the square, 45-meter-high bell tower, the corners of which are sloping on the upper floor. It is crowned by a detached, curved hood. The choir and nave are divided into two rows of windows arranged one above the other.

Inside, the single-nave nave is divided into five axes by Corinthian double pilasters and high arched windows in flat niches in between . Another row of small arched windows opens in the attic zone . The east corners of the nave are bevelled.

Another basket arch opens to the drawn-in, three-sided closed choir, on both sides of which oratorios with curved parapets are cut. The choir and nave are covered by barrels of stab cap.

In the west of the nave, a double gallery is built in, which rests on columns with Ionic capitals . The organ is located on the upper gallery .

Stucco in the nave
Stuck above the gallery

The stucco was probably made by the builder of the church, Joseph Anton Geisenhof. The pilasters are decorated with medallions depicting the apostles , church fathers and other saints. Vases can be seen on the upper cornices , the agraffes over the window niches are carved with angel heads. The ceiling is covered with flower garlands, frame stucco and cartouches .

Frescoes

The frescoes were created by Johann Nepomuk Eberle in 1788. The representation in the choir refers to the patronage of the church, the visit of Mary to Elisabeth , the mother of John the Baptist . The Assumption of Mary is depicted in the nave . The frescoes in the niches above the side altars are dedicated to Saint Afra and Saint Ulrich , the patrons of the Augsburg diocese , to which Lechbruck belongs.

Furnishing

pulpit
Decor on the pulpit body
  • In the middle niche of the high altar is the miraculous image of Our Lady on the Lech , a clothed Madonna and Child from the 17th century. The side figures by Nikolaus Weiß (1760–1809) depict Mary's parents, St. Anna and St. Joachim .
  • The figures of the two side altars also come from Nikolaus Weiß, on the left altar in the middle St. Joseph with the baby Jesus and on the side St. Florian and St. Wendelin , on the right altar Antonius of Padua and on the side Johannes Nepomuk and St. Sebastian .
  • The classicist pulpit was made around 1780/90. Biblical quotations can be read in the cartouches on the pulpit.
  • The choir stalls and confessionals date from around 1806.
  • The Stations of the Cross pictures with their rococo frames were taken over from the previous church. They were executed in 1750 by Franz Anton Wassermann.
  • The crucifix with the Mother of Sorrows from the first half of the 18th century comes from the demolished parish church of Steingaden .
  • On the west wall there are votive pictures on which the miraculous image of Our Lady on the Lech is depicted. On the painting from 1757 the place Lechbruck and the old church can be recognized. The picture from 1928 with the view of the Basilica of St. Michael in Altenstadt and the new Lechbruck church is a reminder of the plague pilgrimage of the Altenstadt residents to Lechbruck.
