The Church of the Assumption of Mary is a Roman Catholic parish church in Humes , a district of the Saarland community of Eppelborn , Neunkirchen district . She bears the patronage of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

At the site of today's church there was a neo-Romanesque chapel built in 1857-62 , which had become too small due to the increase in population . In September 1896 the chapel, which had meanwhile also become dilapidated , was torn down. In the year that the previous building was demolished, construction work began to build today's church, for which the architect Lambert von Fisenne ( Gelsenkirchen ) drafted the plans. When the church was nearing completion, the tower collapsed on October 31, 1897 . The reason for this was insufficiently stable foundations . Part of the left aisle was also swept away in the collapse . On October 30, 1898, the church, which was built as a branch church of the Wiesbach parish , was consecrated. The consecration took place on July 13, 1907.

As a result of a further strong increase in the number of inhabitants, the church was expanded in the years 1952–53 according to plans by the architect Moritz Gombert ( Saarbrücken ). In accordance with the demands of the Second Vatican Council , the choir was redesigned in 1971-72 . Due to a smoldering fire on March 14, 1989, which considerably contaminated the interior of the church, and especially the choir room, a new painting was necessary in 1992.

Architecture and equipment

The church building is a typical representative of historicism and shows elements of different architectural styles. While the exterior is largely based on neo-Romanesque forms, there are also neo-Gothic elements inside the church . The nave of the four- bay pseudo - basilica is divided into a central nave and two aisles. The ribbed vault , the belt arches and the arches to the arcade-like aisles are supported by mighty pillars . An elaborate rosette painting decorates the ridge vault of the broad, conical choir room.

The exterior is dominated by the 38 m high tower with a pyramid roof to which a stair tower is "attached" as a typical feature of Fisenne's work. When the church was expanded from 1952 to 1953, a roof with an elevated transverse ridge was built over the choir as a counterpart to the dominant tower .

The 1949 acquired winged altar in the sanctuary, created by the sculptor Rudolf Höfle ( Morbach ), the Assumption of Mary. A created around 1800 monstrance , an altar stone, the masonry of the St. Martin founded monastery church taken in Tours and a crucifix from the early 19 In the 18th century there are other sacred objects or furnishings in the church that are artistically significant.

Behind the church is a Lourdes grotto built with stones from Neunkircher Eisenwerk , which was consecrated on December 10, 1955.

organ

Until 1945 the church owned an organ built by Johannes Klais ( Bonn ) in 1910 as Opus 440 , which had 9 registers , divided into two manuals and a pedal . The game and stop action was pneumatic. Commissioned in the year it was built, the instrument was abandoned in 1945.

The present organ was built in 1965 and 1972 by the Christian Gerhardt ( Boppard ) company. The Kegelladen instrument has 14 registers, divided into two manuals and a pedal. The game and stop action is electro-pneumatic. The disposition is as follows:
