The Maria Königin Church is a Catholic parish church in Saarbrücken . It was on 31 May 1959 by the Trier Bishop Matthias Wehr ordained . The church is assigned to the diocese of Trier . On August 22nd (until 1969: May 31st) is the patronage day of the Mary Queen's Festival .

founding

On the initiative of Father Augustinus Reinstadler , the Cologne church architect Rudolf Schwarz was awarded the contract after a tender in which five architects took part, to build a distinctive Marienkirche on Saarbrücken's Rotenbühl . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on December 8, 1954. The foundation stone was laid on May 31, 1956, the consecration of the church on May 31, 1959, on the (then) feast of the Queen of Mary .

building

The church was built from red-brown sandstone , which comes from a quarry in the Landstuhl ( Palatinate ) area and was left raw both inside and outside. The 80 cm thick sandstone masonry gives the building a monumental effect.

The church building has a length of 46 m, a width of 34 m and a height of 15 m. Since a crypt could be pushed under the church due to the hillside location, the building is 5 m higher on its west side. The load-bearing framework, which is visible in the interior, as well as the mighty pillars and the reinforcing cross of the crossing and the joists of the roof structure are made of reinforced concrete . The large windows of the church are carried and supported by wide curved concrete frames and strong posts.

The ground plan of the church is strictly geometrical and is made up of two crossing ellipsoids of different lengths with axes that meet at right angles , creating a figure with symmetrically curved partial ellipses . Of these partial ellipses, three are formally similar, the fourth is longer. The result is a west-facing nave , which flows into a centralizing system consisting of a crossing, transept and choir , which can be viewed as conches . The nave is closed off by a fourth partial ellipse, the western cone. The complex is reminiscent of the three-conch choir , a special floor plan in the medieval architecture of church buildings.

Furnishing

Particularly worth seeing inside the church are the stained glass windows created by the glass painter Wilhelm Buschulte ( Unna ) in 1963–64 with representations of symbols of the veneration of Mary , whose pictorial program , freely based on the Lauretanian litany, refers to the church as the incarnation of the "Queen of Mary"; moving on a sandstone stele located tabernacle of Karl Schrage , the head of Gold and silver class of Werkkunstschule Wuppertal , as well as that of the sculpting Elmar Hillebrand and Theo Heiermann ( Cologne created) crossroads in 14 reliefs of red sandstone in the south and North conche of the church.

Also worth seeing are the sculpture of Saint Theresa von Lisieux by Theo Heinemann ( Cologne ), the group of figures "Baptism of Jesus" made in Alsace around 1750 and restored in 1999 at the entrance to the baptistery next to the baptismal font , which is slightly elevated on 3 steps and thus the The altar symbolizing the Holy Trinity , consisting of a simple, square sandstone block and the altar cross .

The church also has a crypt , which consists of an upper and a lower part. There is a Lady Chapel in the upper crypt on the ground floor.

organ

Main organ

The organ of the church was built in 1964 by the organ builder Alfred Führer ( Wilhelmshaven ). The instrument with 3282 pipes has 40 registers , divided into 3 manuals and pedal . The organ is set up slightly higher than the altar on a choir platform in the rear conche of the church. The housing is made of larch wood . In 2001 a partial restoration was carried out by the company Jäger & Brommer ( Waldkirch ), whereby a minor change in the disposition was made.
