Mark Andrew Eaton (born May 6, 1977 in Wilmington , Delaware ) is a former American ice hockey player and current coach and functionary who played 718 games for the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators between 1995 and 2013 , Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League on the position of defender . Eaton celebrated his greatest career success in the service of the Pittsburgh Penguins when he won the Stanley Cup in 2009 . Eaton has been Director of Player Development for the Chicago Blackhawks in the NHL since summer 2016 .
Career
Mark Eaton began his career as a hockey player with the Waterloo Black Hawks , for which he was active from 1995 to 1997 in the United States Hockey League . The defender then played for the University of Notre Dame team for a year and was named CCHA Rookie of the Year after the season , after which he was signed as a free agent by the Philadelphia Flyers on August 4, 1998 for whose farm team , the Philadelphia Phantoms from the American Hockey League , he made his professional ice hockey debut in the 1998/99 season. In the following season, the left-shooter made his debut for the Flyers in the National Hockey League , where he scored a goal in a total of 34 games and was an assist in his rookie year .
On September 29, 2000, Eaton was given in exchange for a third-round vote in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft to the Nashville Predators , for which he was on the ice for the following six seasons in the NHL. Only during the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season he played exclusively for the Grand Rapids Griffins from the AHL. On July 3, 2006, the American was hired as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Penguins , with whom he failed in the 2007/08 Stanley Cup final at the Detroit Red Wings , where he only played in 36 regular season games was used. In the following season he and his team took revenge and the former national player won the prestigious Stanley Cup for the first time in his career. Eaton contributed to this success with 16 scorer points, including eight goals, in a total of 92 games. In early July 2010, he moved to the New York Islanders . In February 2013 he was signed by the Pittsburgh Penguins. There he played the 2012/13 season to the end and then ended his active career.
Before the 2014/15 season, Eaton was hired as a development coach by the Chicago Blackhawks from the NHL. After two years he was promoted to Director of Player Development in the 2016/17 season .

For the USA , Eaton took part in the 2001 and 2002 World Championships .
