History, infrastructure and sights

The area was settled under the Lords of Traisen around the middle of the 11th century. Around 1220 it belonged to the sovereign rule , then Gutenstein Regional Court . From 1595 the noble family of Hoyos held the patronage of the Gutenstein rule.

The place is originally a church hamlet: today's Catholic parish church of St. Nicholas dates from the second quarter of the 13th century and was first mentioned around 1250/60. The place name (' Au an der Schwarza') is documented only between 1632 and 1658, so the place itself was probably only grown relatively late. Around 1840 the actual Kirchweiler only comprised 7 houses near the church and was at that time "the smallest market town in the country".

At the time of the Turkish siege in 1529 , the hamlet and church were sacked by militants, but the residents had fled to the surrounding forests. Traces of this have been found in the Herrengrotto in the Klafterwand above the village.

In 1569 the parish rights were confirmed and in the later 16th century the church was decorated with wall paintings. Around 1715/17 it was completely renovated and redesigned in baroque style .

Today's B27  Höllental Straße ( Rohr  - Gloggnitz ) is an old connecting route from the Mostviertel via the Kalte Kuchl to the southern industrial district . But at the end of the 18th century it was only a footpath through the Höllental , not even passable on horseback. It was not until the timber entrepreneur Georg Hubmer , the "Rax-King", that the path turned into a cart path. The road was only laid out in 1832.

1908 was the occasion of his 60th birthday Emperor Franz Joseph's Chapel in honor of Franz Joseph I built.

Today the place is known as a destination for hikers. The Obersberg is a beautiful panoramic mountain. The Falkenstein nature park and nature reserve is located directly above the village . It offers “the Rax – Schneeberg area in miniature”, and guided tours are also offered. The Schwarzatal around the market still belongs to the European Protected Area Northeastern Randalpen: Hohe Wand – Schneeberg – Rax , a fauna-flora-habitat- area with an ecological focus, and to the comprehensive landscape protection area Rax – Schneeberg . A natural monument beech tree stands south-east on the slope at Hotterhüttel .
