Mary Joe Fernández (born August 19, 1971 in Santo Domingo , Dominican Republic ) is a former American tennis player .

Career

She reached the final of a Grand Slam tournament three times in her career . However, they lost in 1990 at the Australian Open and 1993 French Open each Steffi Graf and in 1992 at the Australian Open Monica Seles .

Fernández won a total of seven individual titles on the WTA Tour . She celebrated her greatest success in Germany in 1997 at the German Open in Berlin. There she won the title with victories over Anna Kurnikowa , Jana Novotná and Mary Pierce .

Mary Joe Fernández stayed in the top ten consistently in the 90s and achieved her best position in the rankings with position 4 in 1991.

In doubles, she won the 1991 Australian Open alongside Patty Fendick , and in 1996 she also secured the title at the French Open in Paris alongside Lindsay Davenport . In the same year she won the final Masters of the year with Davenport again. The following year she was named the best doubles player of the season by the WTA.

In 1992 and 1996 she and Gigi Fernández won the gold medal in women's doubles at the Olympic Games in Barcelona and Atlanta . In the women's singles she also won the bronze medal in Barcelona and she was in the 1996 Olympic semifinals - in the bronze medal game she was defeated by Jana Novotna.

One of her most impressive performances was her quarter-final game against Gabriela Sabatini at the 1993 French Open . Fernández was able to turn the match around after a seemingly hopeless deficit of 1: 6 and 0: 5 and defeated the favored opponent after defending five match points with 1: 6, 7: 6 and 10: 8. She then made it to the final, where she failed to Steffi Graf (whom she could only defeat once, at an unofficial invitation tournament in France).

Today Mary Joe Fernández is a sports commentator at ESPN and was team leader of the US Fed Cup team until 2016 .
