Mattias Östberg (born August 24, 1977 ) is a former Swedish football player . The defender has played his career so far mainly in his home country. Due to a regulation in transfer law, he was in a semi-series without a club in 2002 after an audition in England.

Career

Östberg started playing football at Östansbo IS . In 1996 he moved to the third division Ludvika FK , with whom he rose to the second division at the end of the 1997 season. As the penultimate with 25 plus points, however, he missed relegation with the club in Division 1 Norra . Since he had made a name for himself in a higher class, he moved to IFK Norrköping in the Allsvenskan . At the side of players like Eddie Gustafsson , Mathias Florén , Klebér Saarenpää , Jonas Wallerstedt and Kristian Bergström , he became a regular on the club's defense. In the 2001 season he came with the team in danger of relegation and ended the season on the relegation place . In the games against Mjällby AIF , third in the table of the Superettan , he was always on the field and helped the club to stay in the league after a 1: 2 away defeat with a 3-1 home game.

After his contract with IFK Norrköping expired at the end of 2001, Östberg played in January 2002 as a test player for the reserve team of the English club Stoke City in a game against the reserves of FC Walsall . However, the club refrained from making a commitment. As a result, he fell victim to a new rule introduced at the time with regard to transfer rights , which provided for a maximum of one international change per season: Since he had played in an official competition game, he was only eligible to play in England until the summer. Eventually he joined IK Brage in the second-rate Superettan, for which he was eligible to play from July. Right from the start he was a regular in the defensive row, but missed relegation with the team at the end of the season. He remained loyal to the club and led him to his new position - he played in defensive midfield - to win the season. In the subsequent promotion games, the team coached by Bernt Ljung won both games against Jönköpings Södra IF , supervised by Olle Nordin , and thus returned directly to the second-highest division. As a newcomer, the club was in a relegation battle and immediately relegated after only five wins this season.

Östberg stayed in higher-class Swedish football and moved to GAIS within the Superettan . With the team he reached the relegation place to Allsvenskan at the end of the 2005 season. At the Gothenburg club again set up as a defender, he was on the field in both games against Landskrona BoIS and rose with the team in the first division. In the first division 2006 season through injury temporarily incapacitated, he made with Richard Ekunde the center-back duo of the club. After he was only used irregularly in the following season due to injury, he announced his departure at the end of the year and a move to local rivals BK Häcken in the summer half of the season .

With his new club, Östberg played alongside Jonas Henriksson , Paulinho , Vinícius Lopes , Johan Lind and David Marek for promotion to the Allsvenskan. With one point ahead of last year's relegated IF Brommapojkarna , who finished third, the team reached a promotion place on the last day of the match. After promotion, Peter Gerhardsson took over as coach and led the team to fifth place in the table. Again temporarily injured, Östberg was one of the regular players under his leadership. In the following season he was definitely a regular player and finally did not miss a minute in the 2011 season when he played all 30 games of the season.

In early August 2012, the Stockholm club Djurgårdens IF signed Östberg as a back-up for the central defense after Marc Pedersen was injured and Kebba Ceesay moved to Poland, and signed a contract with him until the end of 2013. By the end of the season he played two games as a substitute. In the following season he was used more often, so that the club extended his contract at the end of the year. In the 2014 season he played four more games before the Stockholm club refrained from further extension in the fall.
