The Hörzendorfer See is an artificial bathing lake in the Hörzendorf district in the municipality of Sankt Veit an der Glan in Carinthia .

location

The lake is located in the hill country north of Ulrichsberg and around three kilometers south of the city. Tributaries are the Hörzendorfer Bach (also called Draschelbach ) from the south and the Projerner Bach from the west; the runoff occurs through the Hörzendorfer Bach in the northeast.

history

In the past, the lake was managed as a drainable carp pond . The original name was Holzer Teich , in the 19th century also Mayer-Teich . For the operation of the powder mills on the Hörzendorfer Bach in the 19th century, it was an advantage that more water was drained from the lake depending on the operating times of the mills.

description

The lake is located in the 444-hectare landscape protection area Hörzendorfer See - Tanzenberg (LGBl. No. 36/1970).

Today the lake is used as fishing and bathing water. Swimming in the lake is paid in the main season. In winter, the small lake freezes over reliably and is then ideal for ice skating .

Animals in the Hörzendorfer See

The following 15 fish species are found in Hörzendorfer See:

The main species are carp, pikeperch and pike. Neozoa are largemouth bass and bluegill. Up until the 1980s there was a large population of noble crayfish ( Astacus astacus ), which became extinct in 1991 due to a subsidence of the lake in the course of renovation work on the outlet. This was followed by stocking with North American signal crabs ( Pacifastacus leniusculus ).
